Annual Bike Rodeo, Free Books fest set for Saturday
The Warren Police Department, in partnership with the Warren Lions Club and Warren Cycle Shop, will host its third annual Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 2.
The event will take place on the 200 block of Liberty Street, between Second and Third avenues, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with registration beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Children ages 5 to 12 are encouraged to participate by bringing their bicycles and helmets.
The rodeo will feature five skill-building stations designed to teach safe riding habits, each focusing on a different aspect of bicycle operation.
“We are going to help children find ways to be safer and give them some skills to build on,” said officer Gary Doolittle of the Warren City Police Department.
Stations include:
– “Look Back” – teaches riders to stay aware of their surroundings while cycling.
– “Newspaper Delivery” – an obstacle course where children toss newspapers into a basket to build coordination and balance.
– “Bike Safety Check” – the Warren Cycle Shop and city police will inspect bicycles and make necessary repairs and adjustments, while also ensuring helmets fit properly.
“The children love it because they get to be hands-on with an officer,” Doolittle said, adding that the event also gives parents a chance to ask questions about safe riding in the city.
A limited number of helmets will be available for children who do not have one.
Participants will be divided into age groups of 5-8 and 9-12. Each group will have a raffle drawing. The winner in the younger group will receive a 20-inch mountain bike, while the older group winner will receive a 24-inch mountain bike from the Warren Cycle Shop.
Free hot dogs, chips, cookies and beverages will be provided. Liberty Street will be closed between Second and Third Avenues during the event.
“We like to give back to the area, and this is one of those great events we’re proud to support,” said Jim Embrey, treasurer of the Warren Lions Club.
Organizers expect about 30 young cyclists to participate.
Following the rodeo, families are encouraged to attend the Free Books for Kids Town Interactive Festival. The fourth annual festival will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Second Avenue, between Liberty Street and the Northwest fountain.
The free event will feature a variety of hands-on activities for children, including a creativity center, magic show, math games, science experiments, opportunities to build and play musical instruments and basket raffles.
Kids Town Books, located inside Warren Antiques and Giftware at 306 Second Avenue, will distribute 1,000 free comic books on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additional attractions include displays of Vietnam and World War II memorabilia, along with food and sweets.
