“It was a good match,” said Sheffield head coach Tom Holden. “We let a couple get away, but overall pretty darn good. The Abraxas kids wrestled hard. It came down to the flip. Their best wrestler, Mason Gourley, who’s at 152. If we get the flip, we could send one of the other kids out and bump Marfink up to the next weight and win that next weight. It just came down to the flip.”

Down by 12, the Wolverines went on a hot streak, with A.J. Barnes (120 pounds) defeating Clarion’s Logan Powell 12-3, followed up with Hayden Holden (126 pounds) getting a 14-8 decision over Seth Weckerly. Both Collin Brown and Chase Kyler would earn hard-fought wins via pinfall. Kyler, who found himself down early in his match was able to battle back and take control enough to get the win with just 5 seconds left in the second period.

“I’m happy with his effort,” said Holden. “He showed a lot of heart. He tried some moves he shouldn’t have tried, headlocks and some things, but put himself in that position but wrestled himself out of it.”

Trenton Mead and Matt Lobdell would also take home pinfall wins, with Mead’s victory coming in just 36 seconds.

Sheffield will host Bradford Area next Tuesday for both junior high and varsity.
