Three Warren runners advanced to the PIAA 2A cross country championships this fall, and those three — Sam Lindell, Shyann Rulander and Morgan Alexander — were also named Region 4 first-team all-stars this week.

In fact, just a sophomore, Lindell was named the Region 4 boys’ Runner of the Year. The all-region teams and region runners of the year were decided by the region’s coaches.

“The award means a lot,” said Lindell, who also qualified for states as a freshman. “I put a lot of work in over the summer and it all paid off during my season.”

In late October, Lindell was third out of 115 runners at the District 10 2A championship meet in Titusville. He finished the 3.1-mile course in 16:06. In the PIAA 2A meet at Hershey, Lindell was 65th out of 247 total finishers.

“Sam earned region runner of the year,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin. “He worked hard all summer and kept working all year to have an impressive season. He should be fun to watch over the next two seasons.”

Rulander, a senior, finished 50th out of 244 runners at the state championships at Hershey Park. She finished the packed course in 21:26, and Alexander – a freshman — was 123rd in 22:41. Rulander was 10th out of 144 at the D10 2A girls’ meet in 19:59, and Alexander 14th in 20:17 to qualify for states.

“Shyann finished her senior season in a great way, competing for girls region runner of the year, and coming up just shy,” said Dustin. “She has put in some serious work over the years and is one of the most deserving kids for her success. Such a great athlete and teammate. Morgan had a great start to her cross country career and is a very motivated athlete. Excited to watch her in the coming years.”

Also underclassmen, Youngsville sophomore Cassidy Britton and Eisenhower freshman Kierra Wismar were named to the Region 4 second team. Britton finished just outside PIAA 1A qualifiers with a 20:52 15th-place finish out of 115 at districts.
