Conneaut drops Warren in 8
LINESVILLE — Warren’s softball team walked off Conneaut last week in Warren. Conneaut returned the favor Thursday, beating visiting Warren 3-2 in eight innings in a Region 5 showdown.
Next up for both: the District 10 4A playoffs. Warren finished the regular season at 12-4 overall and 11-3 in the region; Conneaut is 13-4 overall and 10-4 in the region.
“Hitting hurt us tonight,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart. “We left way too many runners on base. Defensively, I loved what I saw. That’s exactly how we need to play next week, so I’m very excited about that. Ellee Irwin snagged a couple hits at third base. Emily Davidson stepped in for Halle (Kuzminski), who’s struggling with a pulled muscle, and did a great job at second base for us.
“We had two outs in the bottom of the sixth and, unfortunately, we had two back-to-back calls go against us at first base,” Stuart added. “It sure would have been nice to have video review on those, but we don’t so it is what it is. We scrimmage Corry away this Saturday, then jump into playoffs next week.”
Starting pitcher Alana Stuart allowed a leadoff homer, but settled down to allow just one more run through seven innings.
Conneaut’s Erika Shrock matched Stuart, allowing just two second-inning runs. Katie Madigan’s two-run double gave the Lady Dragons a 2-1 lead but a runner was thrown out to end the inning.
The sixth-inning Conneaut run tied the game at 2-2.
Warren left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth and consecutive hits by Linda Shepard and Brooke Wise in the bottom of the eighth walked it off for Conneaut.
