Lakewood YMCA hosts P-J tournament

LAKEWOOD, N.Y. — The Post-Journal Classic tennis tournament was held this weekend at the Lakewood YMCA.
Friday afternoon, the action started with the Rising Stars Junior Singles Division. The top seeds out of the round-robin play were William Beaton, Gregory Bagnoni, Jack Sherry, Finn Johnson, Eileen Cui and Gilen Gottinger.
In the boys semifinals, Beaton defeated Johnson 4-2 and Bagnoni bested Sherry 4-2. Beaton claimed the championship by edging Bagnoni 4-2.
Friday’s play concluded with Rising Stars Junior Doubles Division play. Madison Hamler and Elliot Striker came out on top with a 6-4 win over Lucy Harrison and Winnie Wolf.
Play continued with Men’s A/High School boys singles. In the round of 32, Jacob Mehler defeated Christian Duro 6-0, 6-1, Clay Hotchkiss defeated Alex Watkins 6-0, 6-0, Mark Lynds beat Justin Phaneuf 6-0, 6-0, Doug Attenberry topped Aryan Noticewala 6-1, 7-5 and Colin Troutman ousted Will Strassburg 6-4, 6-0.
In the round of 16, Mehler defeated Thinus Marais 6-3, 7-5, Matthew Bittel beat Doug McKracken 6-1, 6-1, Aravind Turaga topped Lynds 6-0, 6-1, Ollie Pfarr ousted Troutman 6-3, 6-0, Hotchkiss beat Logan Fincher 6-0, 6-2, Graham Louis beat Neil Cosico 6-4, 6-1, Attenberry topped Jason Chiocco 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 and Gavin Ferretti beat Isaac Moses 6-1, 6-0.
In the quarterfinals, Hotchkiss beat Louis 6-2, 6-4, Turaga topped Pfarr 6-2, 6-0, Ferretti downed Attenberry 6-2, 6-2 and Mehler swept Bittel 6-0, 6-0.
Turaga beat Mehler 6-3, 6-1 and Ferretti topped Hotchkiss 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals.
Ferretti then won the title with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Turaga.
The High School Girls Division began with play in the round of 16. Mackenzie Lester defeated Alannah Garza 6-2, 6-4, Hiba Munir beat Grace Carr 6-1, 6-0, Angelina Fiasco topped Izzy Heacox 6-1, 6-2, Enisa Siljkovic eliminated Iris Kiehl 6-2, 6-2, Lina Warrier downed Madison McDunn 6-0, 6-0, Riley Farrugello beat Madaleyn Perry 1-6, 6-4, 10-3, Mary Gerace swept Kaelin Hatfield 6-1, 6-1 and Sophia Glance was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Sydney Govoni.
In the quarterfinals, Munir beat Lester 6-0, 6-1, Warrier topped Farrugello 6-1, 6-1, Glance downed Gerace 6-2, 6-2 and Siljkovic was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Fiasco.
Munir beat Siljkovic 6-3, 6-1 and Glance topped Warrier 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Glance then won the title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Munir.
In the High School Boys Doubles Division quarterfinals, Isaac Moses and Alex Blehar beat Lynds and Strassburg 3-6, 7-5, 10-6.
In the semifinals, Ferretti and Pfarr beat Moses and Blehar 6-2, 6-3 while Mehler and Graham Louis topped Kiehl and Smelko 6-4, 7-5.
Ferrett and Pfarr then topped Mehler and Louis 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
The round of 16 for High School Girls Doubles, Kaelin Hatfield and Iris Kiehl defeated Grace Carr and Tasha Ferry 6-1, 3-6, 13-11.
Macy Youngberg and Nicole Youngberg opened quarterfinal play by eliminating Hatfield and Kiehl 6-3, 6-1. Madelyn Perry and Sydney Cochran defeated Angelina Fiasco and Riley Farrugello 6-3, 5-7, 11-9, Hiba Munir and Elizabeth Kane beat Sydney Giovoni and Mary Gerace 6-2, 6-3 and Lina Warrier and Sophia Glance defeated Izzy Heacox and Mackenzie Lester 6-4, 6-3.
In the semifinals, Munir and Kane swept Warrier and Glance 7-5, 6-1 while the Youngbergs topped Perry and Cochran 6-1, 6-1. Munir and Kane then won the championship with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over the Youngbergs.
Men’s Open Singles took the court next. In the quarterfinals, Matt Johnson topped Thinus Marias 6-3, 7-5, Jai Redkar beat Doug Attenberry 6-0, 6-2, Cooper Miller led Angelica Ocha 3-0 when Ocha retired due to an injury and Aaron Heinlein beat Ewan Malenfant 6-1, 6-2.
In the semifinals, Redkar topped Henlein 6-3, 6-2 and Miller beat Johnson 6-4, 3-6, 11-9.
Redkar won the title with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Miller.
In Men’s Open Doubles quarterfinals, Pat Grab and Jonah NG beat Paul Stark and Justin Stark 6-1, 6-0, Bob Olsen and Gary Thompson topped Billy Stives and Anderson 6-1, 6-2 and Logan Fincher and Thomas Pellegrino topped Heinlein and Aravind Turaga 7-5, 6-2.
In the semifinals, Matt Johnson and Rahul Warrier beat Olsen and Thompson 6-2, 6-3 while Grab and NG topped Fincher and Pellegrino 6-3, 6-0.
Grab and NG beat Johnson and Warrier 6-0, 7-5 in the final.
The tournament concluded with Open Mixed Doubles play. Thomas Pellegrino and Sydney Govoni, Gerace and Hotchkiss, CeCe Eklum and Marais, and Jamie Glatz and Macy Youngberg were the top four seeds.
In the semifinals, Pellegrino and Govoni defeated Glatz and Youngberg 4-2 while Eklum and Marais bested Gerace and Hotchkiss 4-0.
Pellegrino and Govoni claimed the title with a 6-1 win over Eklum and Marais.
