Wolverines fall at home

Smethport’s Lent shines in season opener, Hubbers win, 49-6

SHEFFIELD — One year removed from a canceled season, Sheffield was back in action on Wolverine Mountain on Saturday under the new leadership of head coach Mike Barr. However, it was the Smethport Hubbers, led by senior quarterback Noah Lent, who walked away with the Week 1 victory, 49-6.

“That one’s on me,” said Barr. “I didn’t have them mentally right. I’ll take that one. We’ve got to be more physical. It was a rough game as a first-year head coach for me. I didn’t do things the way I thought they should be done. I’ll own this one.”

Lent rushed for 95 yards with two scores and threw for 171 yards on just 6 completions and another four touchdowns. Lent’s top target, Alex Ognen, pulled in four balls for 109 yards and reached paydirt twice.

On the Wolverines side of the ball, Sheffield struggled to get the offense rolling, with brief moments of success that were thwarted by turnovers and a stout Hubber defense.

Sheffield quarterback Michael Mihalic attempted 20 passes, completing seven for 54 yards, and throwing four interceptions. Mihalic’s receivers were plagued by drops, which is something that Barr hopes to remedy this week in practice.

“I’ll have to go back and watch the film, to be honest with you. I feel we had some decent gains if we catch the football,” said Barr. “We’re gonna keep running those routes and keep throwing. We got to get more game speed. I talked to these kids about game speed at practice and that game speed needs to transport from there to here. That’s what we got to work on. I don’t feel we will hit our stride until Week Three. We’re still building. I think we can hang with anybody.”

The Wolverines forced six Hubber fumbles, recovering four, one of which was returned for a third-quarter 85-yard touchdown by Malique Outland for Sheffield’s lone score.

Despite giving up 20 points in the first quarter, and another 29 in the second, the Wolverines held the Hubbers scoreless in the second half.

“There were some of them that got down, but it wasn’t infectious,” said Barr. “I think we got a little slow, a little flat. It could have been the heat, it could have been a number of things, but there’s definitely things to work on, but I didn’t see anything glaring that’s going to be like, we gotta pack it in. This is football. We’ll put the pads on Monday and get back to work.”
