‘We can’t afford socialism’

Dear Editor, Neither Democrats nor Republicans can afford the socialism we already have. Adding more socialist spending is absurd. The National Debt (ND) is $23 trillion. This year: spending – revenue = $1 trillion added to the national debt. Spending must be cut not increased. In our budget, mandatory spending consumes 61%, most of which is Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Additionally, at present rates, interest on the ND is 8%. Defense spending is 15%. Only about 16% is left for discretionary spending. SS and health care expenses are a juggernaut growing ...

An observation

Dear Editor, Although I’m not a resident of the City of Warren I, like many other non-residents, contribute to the economy of Warren on a daily basis. Why is it imperative to have a Round-About at the intersection of Market Street and Pennsylvania Avenue West? A state of the art traffic signal would suffice according to most of us who travel through that intersection. Even slight modifications to turning lanes would also be beneficial. The response to this question will be most interesting. Sincerely, M.J. Shanshala, Warren

‘Under your radar’

Dear Editor, This letter is not for the 45% of the American people who have made up their minds that our current President and his toe-sucking Administration is off the rails. Nor is it designed for those 45% of the American people who see this same President and his Administration as anointed by God. It IS directed to the remaining 10% who will be making up their minds this coming November as to whom they choose to protect themselves and their children from an onslaught of attacks on our air, water, and turf for the foreseeable future and beyond. There are currently 95, ...

Finding common ground

Dear Editor, There is a poison running wild in Washington and I don’t mean Trump. I’m referring to those who are called “Conservatives” and “Liberals.” Watching the impeachment hearings/trial and the Democratic debates have shown me that Barnum and Bailey are no longer the king of the circus and they certainly don’t have the market on the clowns. We are in serious trouble my fellow Americans and the sad part is that after the November election it’s not gonna be any better regardless of who you vote for. If you think ANY political party is going to act in or serve ...

‘The Swamp’

Dear Editor, Donald J. Trump stated emphatically that he alone was going to “drain the swamp” in Washington, DC. That “swamp” will soon engulf the entire White House, and significant parts of Congress and the Senate. Now the Attorney General is stuck in the mud. The “alligators and snakes” are taking over the swamp at the expense of we the “birds, turtles, and other wild life.” It’s time to let the “trappers” throughout our country harvest the “alligators and snakes” to restore the swamp to a manageable environment. What Trump didn’t accomplish we ...

Scarnati

Dear Editor, I am miffed! It is more than inconsiderate of the election process that President Pro Tem Joe Scarnati announced 6 days before the final filing date of Tuesday, Feb. 18th, 2020, that he is leaving the PA Senate and not seeking reelection! The press release on his official website is dated Feb. 12th and it appeared in the Warren Times Observer on the 14th! How are citizens interested in running for this most significant elected office in our Commonwealth able to collect 500 signatures and get them to Harrisburg on time? Ballotpedia suggests getting twice the signatures ...
