Readers Speak

Scary lessons Dear Editor, Many thanks to Josh Cotton for his timely article on the 77th anniversary of the atomic booming of Hiroshima. It was chilling to read that some considered the bomb to be one of the greatest scientific advances in history. Seventy-seven years later we live under the threat of nuclear annihilation. It is estimated that the nine nuclear nations have a combined 13,000 nuclear warheads in their arsenals. Experts agree that the only reason we haven’t experienced a nuclear explosion is luck. Luck can change. We the people need a grassroots groundswell of ...

Vote for values

Dear Editor, Everyone who has thoughts about the government and what we see taking place has the same conclusion: vote in the coming election. The solution to the chaos we see is that each voter take the time to know the issues and how to determine what is seen as the desired outcome. We have many choices as citizens: ¯ If you like open borders with death and destruction reining its ugly head in our country, abortion-even as late as birth, inflation, high gas prices at the pump and in the home, weakened military, rampant corruption in the high offices, police polarized and ...

Choices with life

Dear Editor, In the July 29 issue of the Times Observer, columnist Star Parker incitingly discusses the comparison of the Lincoln-Douglas debate of 1854 to the present discussion of abortion rights. She writes “Is our ultimate value that a woman have the option to destroy her unborn child, or is our ultimate value sanctity of life.” May I suggest that the more important choice is omitted; that the woman’s right to conceive an unwanted child be considered. How many abortions result from promiscuity and questionable relationships? Charles S. Merroth, Warren

Troubling trip

Dear Editor, What’s the reason for Nancy Pelosi going to Taiwan? To aggravate China even more about this island? And a military force to guide her trip? What is she thinking? Carl A. Rozzelle, Russell

Keeping it local

Dear Editor, Our city manager, Nancy Freenock, will be leaving Warren in August. She has served the city of Warren for 10 years. Thank you for your service and all the best in your future endeavors. I believe Warren was lucky to have a city manager for 10 years, but I am not confident such a person and long tenure can be found again outside of Warren. Recent experience with the planning and code department is a good example. The employee before Randy Rossey was in and out faster than a revolving door, and he certainly thought he was better than our town. I saw him being here only ...

Political fallout

Dear Editor, A couple of weeks after Roe was overturned, the Pennsylvania legislature recessed for the summer — and typical for the ending of a legislative session here was the hurried passage of a partisan piece of legislation. It’s the old story: amendments or bills from the party in power (the Republicans) are given a vote while amendments from the party out of power get tabled! That’s huge! And since I’m speaking of power politics, why is it that bills to address the redistricting process with a Citizens’ Redistricting Commission invariably get gutted or blocked? ...
