Warren man sentenced to 16-33 years in prison
A Warren man has been sentenced to between 16.5 and 33 years in prison by Judge Maureen Skerda after raping a child.
David S. Gonzalez, 32, of Warren had been charged in January with two counts of rape of a child, a class 1 felony, two counts of statutory sexual assault: 8-11 years older, a class 2 felony; two counts of sexual assault, a class 2 felony; two counts of aggravated indecent assault of a child, a class 1 felony; two counts of aggravated indecent assault without consent, a class 2 felony; two counts of aggravated indecent assault – person less than 13 years old, a class 2 felony; two counts of indecent assault involving a person less than 13 years of age, a class 3 felony; two counts of unlawful contact with a minor – sexual offenses, a class 1 felony; three counts of corruption of minors – defendant age 18 or above, a class 3 felony; indecent exposure, a class 1 misdemeanor, and marijuana possession – small amount personal use after an investigation by the State Police at Warren.
Gonzalez initially pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared in court in March. In September Gonzalez pleaded guilty to only one count of rape of a child, with the rest of the charges against him not prosecuted. Gonzalez had been jailed on $100,000 bail since he was charged in late January.
According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause filed by the State Police, the Warren Child Advocacy Center interviewed a 9-year-old girl who disclosed several incidents that allegedly occurred between Jan. 1, 2024, and Jan. 23, 2025. The girl said the incidents happened at home. An arrest warrant was issued based on the girl’s testimony.
Gonzalez will also be subject to 12 months probation when he is released from prison and will pay a $1,000 fine. He has been classified as a sexually violent predator, a designation given after the state Sexual Offender Assessment Board determines a sex offender has a mental abnormality or personality disorder making them likely to re-offend. The board reviews cases after a conviction. The designation means Gonzalez will be subject to lifelong sex offender registration, mandatory counseling and heightened community notification under Megan’s Law.
Also appearing in court this week was Richard Lee Sweet, 52, of Wattsburg, Pa., who is currently in the Warren County Jail on $250,000 bail after being charged with two counts of first-degree rape of a child, two counts of first-degree statutory sexual assault: 11 years older, two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child; two counts of first-degree felony unlawful contact with a minor; two counts of third-degree felony indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age; and two counts of third-degree corruption of minors – defendant age 18 or above earlier this month for incidents that allegedly began in December 2015. Sweet appeared in court Wednesday, where his charges were held over for the Court of Common Pleas. Sweet is scheduled in court again Jan. 15 in front of Judge Gregory Hammond for a formal arraignment.
