Motion to postpone Youngsville school closing defeated

The Warren County School Board will not postpone the closure of Youngsville Middle-High School.

The motion, proposed by board member Stephanie Snell and seconded by Dan Sullivan, sought to postpone the closure until July 1, 2026, allowing students to remain at Youngsville Middle High School for an additional year. The motion failed with a 5-4 vote, with Snell, Sullivan, Tammi Holden, and Savanna Cochran voting in favor, and Cody Brown, Kevin Lindvay, Paul Mangione, Mary Passinger and John Wortman voting against.

Snell initially introduced the motion at last month’s meeting, but it was not added to the agenda due to a lack of 24-hour notice. The item was formally included in Monday’s agenda, prompting a detailed discussion among board members.

Holden expressed concerns about the rapid pace of the closure process.

“I think this thing is moving at warp speed for Youngsville High School,” Holden said. “Before we commence with any of this, I would expect a detailed cost analysis for everything that is being involved in this move. I feel that it’s moving without answers.”

Snell raised issues about transportation and extracurricular activities, noting, “I don’t feel comfortable with transportation. We haven’t heard a thing from the new transportation director, that concerns me. I don’t feel there’s enough shown that the students are gaining course-wise in Eisenhower, and one of the biggest concerns is we do not have a solid plan for the extracurriculars, and that is big.”

During the discussion, Wortman, Lindvay, and Mangione directed a series of questions to Superintendent Gary Weber to assess the district’s preparedness for the closure. Weber confirmed that PIAA transfers, athletic uniforms, the 2025-2026 budget, staffing, transportation plans, course requests, and personnel restructuring have already accounted for the closure. However, he noted that master schedules were still in progress.

In related business, the board approved a 7-1 vote to subdivide the Youngsville Middle High School property, separating the school building from the track and athletic fields. This proposal awaits approval from the Youngsville Borough Council.

The board also voted unanimously to change the name of Sheffield Elementary School to Sheffield Elementary Middle School.

Starting at $3.50/week.
