Hutchinson proposes memorial resolution for man killed in Trump attack
AP photo Family, friends and community attend a candlelight vigil for Corey Comperatore, the former fire chief shot and killed at a weekend rally for former President Donald Trump, Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.
The region’s state senator wants the state Legislature to honor the memory of Corey Comperatore, the Sarver man who was killed during the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Two other people were critically injured during the shooting. Two other people were injured at the rally: David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township. As of Wednesday night, both had been upgraded to serious but stable condition, according to a spokesperson with Allegheny Health Network.
Sen. Scott Hutchinson, R-Oil City, filed a co-sponsorship memorandum for the bill, which has yet to be drafted, on Wednesday. The memorandum was introduced the same day hundreds of people gathered in Sarver to remember Comperatore.
“It is with profound respect and deep sorrow that we honor the memory of Corey Comperatore, a man whose courage and dedication to both his family and his country are unparalleled,” Hutchinson wrote in his memorandum. “Corey’s actions during the attempted assassination of the former President of the United States serve as a testament to his unwavering bravery and selflessness.”
Wednesday’s public event was the first of two to memorialize and celebrate Comperatore’s life. The second, a visitation for friends, was planned for Thursday at Laube Hall in Freeport. Outside Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, where the vigil was held for Comperatore, a sign read: “Rest in Peace Corey, Thank You For Your Service,” with the logo of his fire company. On the rural road to the auto racing track — lined with cornfields, churches and industrial plants — a sign outside a local credit union read: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Comperatore family.”
Comperatore, 50, had worked as a project and tooling engineer, was an Army reservist and spent many years as a volunteer firefighter after serving as chief, according to his obituary. He died Saturday during the attempt on Trump’s life at the rally in Butler. Comperatore spent the final moments of his life shielding his wife and daughter from gunfire, officials said.
“Corey was a former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company in Sarver, Pa.,” Hutchinson wrote. “His career was marked by dedication, leadership, and a commitment to serving others. As a firefighter, Corey faced numerous dangers, always placing the safety and well-being of others above his own. This same spirit of selflessness defined his final moments. Please join me by co-sponsoring a condolence resolution to honor Corey Comperatore’s memory and condemning all acts of political violence. Let us remember and celebrate his life, his service, and his ultimate sacrifice for his family. All citizens deserve the right to assemble without fear of retribution or violence.”
