Final plans for center of roundabout set
Times Observer file photo Three trees, a flag pole and lights with a river stone surface is the final plan for the center of the roundabout at the intersection of Market St. and Pennsylvania Ave. That work is expected to be completed by May.
What’s going in the center of the roundabout at the intersection of Market Street and Pennsylvania Avenue has been settled.
“We know exactly what we’re going to do,” Department of Public Works Superintendent Joe Reinke told the Parks, Recreation and Landscape Commission on Tuesday. “It’s been finalized. You’re going to see it in May.”
The final plan he outlined will see three trees planted in the center with a flagpole and lighting.
“It’s going to be a low-maintenance surfacing of river stone,” he said.
The species of tree aren’t yet finalized. The reason for three trees instead of one stems from the fact that there are infrastructure elements in the middle that make placing a tree there impossible. The commission did discuss one element of the roundabout that has proved frustrating – people not signaling when they attempt to leave it.
But it appears the opposition to the change that stretched over several years has largely died away.
“The actual roundabout,” City Manager Mike Holtz said, “we get positive stuff.”
Holtz also told the commission that the city is seeking to secure grant funding to replace the slide at the CAR Pool.
That will require, he said, a feasibility study for the pool so the city will be seeking grant funds to fund that study before going after dollars for the slide.
The current slide is over 20 years and Reinke said the project will be in the $100,000 range.
“And it’s very popular,” Commission chair Mike Suppa said of the slide. “It makes the pool in some respects.”
