Diving into action: Work begins ahead of swimming pool reopening

It’s looking good for the reopening of the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool.

The pool has not been open since the 2019 season due to COVID-19.

Youngsville Borough Council discussed the pool Monday, and a crew from the Department of Public Works started preliminary work there on Wednesday.

The pool needs more work than it normally would because of the inactivity.

On Wednesday, the crew started removing leaves that had gathered in the basin, sprayed the sides and bottom of the structure with a mixture of water and acid, and generally cleared the way for larger projects.

Special concrete and mortar is ready to repair cracks and leaks, Wayne Glasgow said.

“We’ll paint it — it’s a two-part epoxy,” Glasgow said. “We’ll caulk around the lights, and get the slide pump ready.”

The pool’s main pump turned on, but it and the heater have not been used for two years. Exactly how well they will work won’t be known until there is water in the pool.

The scheduled opening date is Saturday, June 11. The schedule includes full operation, including swimming lessons.

“We’re hoping to do everything we always have,” Council Member Nicole Cowan said.

To do that, the borough has to find some more help.

The borough needs 12 to 14 lifeguards in order to fully open the pool for its traditional hours.

Right now, the number is 10 — including management, who would ideally not have to be counted among the lifeguards, Borough Manager Wendy Wilcox said.

Wilcox said she is hoping for at least four more applicants. Anyone interested may find an application at the borough office or the Parks and Recreation page at www.youngsvilleborough.org.

If there are not enough lifeguards, portions of the pool might be closed off at times, Council Member Rick Brewster said.

He suggested that the borough may be able to share lifeguards with the City of Warren.

Starting at $4.00/week.
