Omicron surge waning as one new case reported

The Omicron surge appears to be waning in Warren County.

After January set a record for new COVID-19 cases, with over 41 cases per day, the first 15 days of February saw 234 cases, or about 15.6 per day.

This week, there have been two days when the Pennsylvania Department of Health has reported only one new case — the Monday and Wednesday reports. On Tuesday, the department reported 14. There were only four days in January — Jan. 1, 2, 23, and 30 — on which single-digit numbers of new cases were reported. The least of those was five.

There have been 7,125 total cases in the county so far. Over 18 percent of the county has had COVID-19 at some point.

The death toll continues to rise, with eight COVID-related deaths reported by the department since the beginning of the month and four of them occurring this month. There is a lag between a death and the reporting of it. So far, the deaths of 204 county residents have been related to COVID-19.

The CDC reported a positivity rate of 11.43 percent on Wednesday.

The number of vaccinations in the county also remains low.

About 150 residents have received their second (or single-dose) vaccinations since the beginning of the month and another 150 have received boosters.

The county total of 17,785 as of Wednesday represents almost 45.5 percent of the county population. CDC is reporting a 51.3 percent vaccination rate of the county population at least five years of age.
