A local nonprofit has expanded its reach toward its mission of providing free books for children.

Free Books for Kids Town has opened a “24/7 free book location” in Youngsville.

“It’s located in the pavilion behind Youngsville Evangelical United Methodist Church at 18 Second Street,” Ruby Wiles, the organization’s founder and director told the Times Observer. “It is easy to enter from Second Street.”

Free Books for Kids Town is a 501(c)4 nonprofit “whose mission focuses on children’s literacy,” a Facebook page for the effort states. “Founded in 2013, we have given over 12,000 books to children in NW PA.”

Wiles emphasized that the location is open “all day every day throughout the year” and drew a distinction that this is not part of the Little Library movement.

“This is a free book location where children can come and select books for their home libraries,” Wiles explained. According to research, having books in the home is one of the most important predictors of academic success. Plus when kids select books they want, this leads to reading enjoyment!”

Wiles thanked Kim Hoover for “spearheading this project and to the church members who support this project.”

“As we celebrate serving Warren County children for 10 years, we continue to expand our efforts to get free books in their hands,” Wiles said. “Reading is fundamental for life success and brings joy and happiness.”

The site currently is full with over 200 books but Wiles said people can donate used books when there is space.

“If you have lots of used children’s books to share, consider starting a new free book location,” Wiles said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
