Deer Lick Trail cleanup back on

The cleanup for Deer Lick Trail is back on.

According to a release from Friends of Allegheny Wilderness, the trail cleanup that was originally scheduled to take place over April 9 and 10 has been set for April 30 into May 1.

“As the snowfall continued to intensify and pile up here in Warren, Pennsylvania on Saturday morning, April 9, it became increasingly apparent that the outlined trail work weekend in the proposed Minister Valley Wilderness Area was becoming less viable,” the release said. “Allegheny National Forest personnel had expressed concerns for the safety of our trail crew working under such conditions in a major windfall area. So, late that morning we made the last-minute call to postpone.”

Now that things are heating up and spring has finally sprung, the work on the trail can begin.

Volunteers will be helping clean the area of the Deer Lick spur of Minister Creek Trail. That trail is still “cluttered with fallen trees and limbs after a storm last June” according to the initial press release. That same storm resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl from New Brighton, Pa., who was camping with a church group from Ellwood City.

The trail was cleared after the storm, but not the spur.

“Volunteers should plan to bring their own food, water, gloves, and sturdy hiking boots, and camping gear if they plan to camp out,” according to an initial press release from the Allegheny National Forest. “If possible, volunteers are asked to bring their own tools such as axes, loppers, and pruning saws.”

“The crew will not be using chain saws or other power tools since Minister Valley is an official ANF Wilderness Study Area,” according to the FAW press release.

Crews will meet at the Minister parking lot on State Route 666 at 10 a.m. April 30, hike in and work on the Deer Lick trail all of Saturday. Those who are interested can camp at the Deer Lick area Saturday night, work Sunday during the day and hike out Sunday afternoon.

Anyone interested in the cleanup can email info@pawild.org for information or to sign up.

Starting at $3.50/week.
