Sheffield keeping train history on track

Every May, across the nation, trains are remembered and celebrated with their own National Day. National Train Day highlights the economic, environmental, and cultural significance of a mode of transportation that was central to the Industrial Revolution, which allowed for the swift transport of goods and people, and in turn provided growth across towns and cities by connecting regions. This day honors railway workers and historic locomotives that represent engineering achievements; an important part of Pennsylvania history.

This free event prompts the Sheffield Depot Preservation Society to reflect on the wonderful achievements of their past as well as to look to the future. It has grown from modest beginnings into a significant non-profit institution dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Sheffield railroad history.

The building’s value has increased exponentially since managing director Dennis Sturdevant decided to preserve the historic train depot, an integral part of Sheffield’s heritage.

The 146-year-old depot is a heritage museum of the town’s history. Preservation projects have included improvements on the building’s roof, storm windows, and hardwood floors. This June, a new project is underway, with the help of the Boy Scouts, to preserve the exterior of the building with each brick to be stained one by one, by hand.

Sturdevant shared how the society is looking forward to seeing young and old enjoy the day by experiencing the model trains, including a 10-foot model of the Union Pacific steam engine train, which was made in Schenectady, and travels a good portion of Pennsylvania.

The Tionesta Valley Narrow Gates Station next door will also be open for visitors on Saturday.

The Sheffield Depot Preservation Society is open to having more volunteers. For more information, contact Sturdevant at 814-968-3016.

Starting at $3.50/week.
