Business Destroyed

A fast-moving fire destroyed a business in Garland early Monday morning.

Garland Volunteer Fire Department Chief Brian Bull said when the first truck arrived on scene, the Tony Stec Lumber building was engulfed in flames.

Although firefighters remained on scene until noon, he said the building was destroyed in less than an hour. The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.

“The old, rough cut lumber and years of sawdust,” Bull said led to the speed of the blaze.

Jim Stec noted the six volunteer fire departments Garland, Spring Creek, Grand Valley, Tidioute, Wrightsville and Youngsville responded to the fire, which began around 7 a.m.

Stec’s son, Lucas, said there was a lot of expensive equipment lost in the fire, and although they have insurance, he didn’t know what they would do now. He also said that there were five employees who are now unemployed.

The lumber mill produced rough cut hardwoods for wholesalers, Lucas Stec said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
