The Allegheny Community Center’s phone number is (814) 723-4180. The number (814) 723-3237 is no longer valid. Also, beginning April 1, the ACC will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

VITA tax program

The last day to submit taxes via the VITA program is April 4. Volunteers will process taxes and rent rebates for anyone making less than $60,000 per year. Call the Allegheny Community Center at (814) 723-4180 for more information. Vita tax volunteers will accept property tax/rent rebates until May 10.

Out and About

The next ‘Out and About’ event is set for April 23 at 5 p.m. These are dinner bus trips. Call the ACC to reserve a spot.

Painting classes

The ACC is offering a watercolor class on Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m. and an acrylic painting class on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Memory Care

In conjunction with Experience, Inc. and the Rouse, the Allegheny Community Center is starting a Memory Care Cafe Kick Off program that provides the opportunity for persons living with dementia and their loved ones to gather for friendship, fun, creativity and connections. Dementia practitioners from the Rouse will be on hand to do an activity with the persons living with dementia while the ACC provides some creative time for caregivers. The opening session is April 11 from noon to 2 p.m. and will be offered the second Thursday of each month. Call the ACC to sign up by April 4.

Safe driving course

A “Seniors for Safe Driving” course will be offered on May 30 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the ACC. The PennDOT approved course for drivers 55+ gives participants the ability to secure a five percent reduction on auto insurance premiums. Cost is $17 and those interested can call the ACC or Seniors for Safe Driving at (800) 559-4880.

Social Media 101

The Care Council and Experience Inc. will be presenting a Social Media 101 course for parents, grandparents and educators on Thursday, May 9 at 5 p.m. Allen McGill with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office of Public Engagement will be the presenter. The meeting will be held at the old Bridges building at 905 Fourth Ave.

Greenhouse to close

Due to a structural evaluation, the Allegheny Greenhouse is closing its doors at the end of this season. The greenhouse will be open beginning May 3 on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Spring Fling cancellation

The Spring Fling Dinner slated for Saturday, April 13 at the Allegheny Community Center has unfortunately been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.
