City residents give Mulberry Park guidance

Early feedback on a survey for the future of Mulberry Park points out the obvious.

Director of Codes and Planning Randy Rossey told the Parks, Recreation and Landscape Commission this week that “one of the biggest comments” addressed drainage issues “which the city is aware of.”

“The city engineer is looking at how to correct that problem,” Rossey said, telling the committee that other themes in the feedback received called for new playground equipment, a trail around the park as well as an expansion of the city’s playground program to that location.

City Arborist Joe Reinke told the Commission that the last tree in the roundabout will be planted this week.

He said that some of the tall grasses from Soldiers and Sailors Park have been added to the center of the roundabout.

“I think it’s going to break up the monotonous rock field, soften the look,” he said.

The Commission also heard from District Forester Cecile Stelter on potential impacts from the series of cold mornings that have occurred recently.

She said the cold is “going to stall ‘green up’ a little bit” but that other possible impacts are in “wait and see” mode.

“It’s all about timing,” she said. “If they’re (the trees) a little bit ahead of time… then they can withstand a little bit of frost and cold mornings like we’ve had.”

Pears and apples could potentially be affected.

“It’s all about the timing,” she said. “Different species as well as different varieties bloom at different times.”
