Memory Care

In conjunction with Experience, Inc. and the Rouse, the Allegheny Community Center is starting a Memory Care Cafe Kick Off program that provides the opportunity for persons living with dementia and their loved ones to gather for friendship, fun, creativity and connections. Dementia practitioners from the Rouse will be on hand to do an activity with the persons living with dementia while the ACC provides some creative time for caregivers. The opening session is March 14 from noon to 2 p.m. and will be offered the second Thursday of each month. Call the ACC to sign up by March 11.

The Allegheny Community Center’s phone number is (814) 723-4180. The number (814) 723-3237 is no longer valid. Also, beginning April 1, the ACC will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Closures

All county senior centers will be closed March 19 for Good Friday.

VITA tax program

The last day to submit taxes via the VITA program is April 4. Volunteers will process taxes and rent rebates for anyone making less than $60,000 per year. Call the Allegheny Community Center at (814) 723-4180 for more information.

Care to Knit

All seniors centers in Warren and Forest counties are participating in the Care to Knit program. Donations of yarn are welcome that will be turned into items like blankets and hats that will be given to those in need.

Intergenerational cooking

An intergenerational cooking class will begin on March 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the ACC. Bring a recipe and one will be pulled at random for the group to make the following month. The first session will see participants making a proper English tea. Call the ACC to reserve a spot by March 11.

Property tax/rent rebate workshops

A series of workshops have been scheduled for those interested in learning more about the state’s property tax/rent rebate program. They will be held on March 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sheffield senior center, March 20 at Experience, Inc. from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., March 21 at the Tidioute towers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 3 from, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marienville senior center, April 10 at the Lander church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and April 17 at the Endeavor senior center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call Experience, Inc. at (814) 723-3763, ext. 139 to make an appointment.

Out and About

The next ‘Out and About’ event is set for April 23 at 5 p.m. These are dinner bus trips. Call the ACC to reserve a spot.

Safe driving course

A “Seniors for Safe Driving” course will be offered on May 30 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the ACC. The PennDOT approved course for drivers 55+ gives participants the ability to secure a five percent reduction on auto insurance premiums. Cost is $17 and those interested can call the ACC or Seniors for Safe Driving at (800) 559-4880.

Greenhouse

Allegheny Greenhouse volunteers are working in advance of an opening set for May 3. Flowers, vegetables and herbs will be available. Funds raised through the effort stay in the community. The greenhouse, located on the Warren State Hospital grounds, will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting May 3.

Spring Fling

Dinner

A Spring Fling Dinner will be held Saturday, April 13, at the ACC. Seating times will be available at 4:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. A gourmet three-course dinner will be prepared by Jack’s Tap House. Entree choices include steak or stuffed salmon ($40) or broccoli alfredo or stir fry vegetables ($35). All proceeds will benefit Free Books for Kids Town. Call the ACC to reserve a table.
