Second graders learn about Diwali

Students at Warren Area Elementary Center expanded their horizons in studying Diwali — the Hindu Festival of Lights.

The holiday is celebrated for five days between mid-October and mid-November.

During that time, students in second grade learned about Diwali and that henna — Mehndi — is a part of that celebration and often used in during a ceremony the night before an Indian wedding, Teacher Leah Gorgacz said.

The class was wrapping up a core knowledge language arts series unit.

“I decided to do henna art as a fun, culminating activity to help bring all of the different cultural concepts that we learned about throughout the unit together,” Gorgacz said. “My students loved seeing the different intricate and detailed henna tattoos and had such a fun time creating their own.”

Starting at $4.00/week.
