Bowling Tournament
The fifth annual Jack V. Barner Memorial Scholarship Bowling Tournament is being organized for Saturdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 at Bowlaway Lanes in Sheffield.
The organizers are hoping to have alley sponsors for this event. Any individual, business or organization that sponsors an alley will be recognized at the tournament. Those contributing more than $50 will be recognized as a major sponsor.
All proceeds from this event will go to a scholarship fund that has been established in memory of Jack V. Barner. Scholarships will be awarded to help assist deserving students at Sheffield Area High School and Kane Area High School with their academic endeavors. If you are interested in supporting this event, make sponsor checks payable to “The Jack V. Barner Memorial Scholarship Fund” and send them to P.O. Box 357, Sheffield, PA.
In order to reserve an alley for the above dates, call Judy at 968-3708. There are two shifts, 4 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. Cost is $125 per team. Payouts for top three teams, high series for men and women, plus juniors will be recognized. Thanks to all who participate in one way or another.
Ruth M. Smith Center
The residents of the Ruth M. Smith Center in Sheffield would like to express their thanks to the Sheffield VFW, Hornburg Drilling, LLC, Sheffield Container, Borst Insurance, Johnson Tire Service, Progressive Woman’s Club of Sheffield, Bill Bunk of Warren, Jim and Becky McMillen and Margery Smith for the donations that they made towards the summer activities.
Letters of appeal were sent out in the early part of December, the above persons have responded generously and we appreciate it very much.
We want to take a trip to Pittsburgh in June to the Museum of Natural History, and ride on the Gateway Clipper. This trip will be the biggest trip we have ever taken and therefore it is the most expensive, bus trips cost more. So with the money received so far we will be able to make this trip. If anyone has received a letter and would still like to make a donation it would be appreciated, because we would like to also take a trip to Erie in July and then to the Port Farms in August.
As everyone is aware the residents at the Ruth Smith Center have a very limited income, and we,, as a non-profit organization, rely on donations. Cornhole Tournament
The second annual music booster cornhole tournament will be held on April 5 at the high school. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., play will start at 1 p.m.; we will be adding a kids division for grades 6-12. Fees $20 per team adults, $10 per team kids. We will pay the top 10 places for adults.

Sheffield Township Meeting
The Sheffield Township Supervisors met on Monday, Jan. 20 for their bi-monthly meeting. The voter’s registration office informed the supervisors that Tuesday, May 20 is Primary Election Day and Tuesday, Nov. 4 will be General Election Day.
Resolution No. 418 Designating Pennsylvania Route 6 as a Pennsylvania Byway was adopted. The Pennsylvania Route 6 Alliance is pursuing Pennsylvania Byway designation of Route 6 across the entire length of Pennsylvania. Such designation carries with it a number of advantages to our local communities. Those advantages include transportation safety improvements, increased travelers and expenditures to support our local businesses, awareness building of special intrinsic qualities of the corridor; which include historic, recreational, cultural, and natural qualities, and the potential for funding to support projects that fit the goals and objectives of the Pennsylvania Byway Program and the Route 6 Corridor Management Plan.
The ACT 13 paperwork was filed with the township from the following oil company for drilling in and around Sheffield Township: Cameron Energy, Weldbank Energy Corp and Shell Exploration.
Warren County Planning and Zoning forwarded a subdivision from the Donelson Property on Utah Road. DCNR has an open application for a recreation and conservation grant. Applications are being accepted from through April 16. They are looking for applications that will advance our local conservation and recreation vision and also those that implement Pennsylvania’s Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan with a particular emphasis on the following strategic areas: Sustainable and Green Park Projects, Rehabilitation and Universal Access; Trails, Land Conservation, Emerging Trends, Rivers Implementation and Partnerships. Supervisor Labesky will be reviewing the application and looking for a possible grant for Sheffield Township.
The safety of a handicap individual on High Street was addressed in regards to cars speeding down Bull Hill. The supervisors asked the secretary to contact PennDOT if signage for handicap individual could be placed in this area warning drivers to slow down. Meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m. to an executive session with the chief of police. Next meeting of the supervisors will be Monday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sheffield Hospitality Center on the corner of Pickering and S. Main streets.

Donations for the Engle family fire are being taken at Allegheny Valley Elementary School. Gift cards for fast food, gas, home improvement, and clothing stores are welcome. Cash donations are welcome as well. The school students are bringing donations for all household items and clothing.

Sheffield Township Library hours are Monday from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday from 1-5 p.m., Wednesday 2-8 p.m., Thursday 1-5 p.m., Friday 1-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library is located at 20 Leather St.

First Annual Clarendon VFW Cornhole Tournament will be held today, Jan. 18 at the Clarendon Fire Hall at 3:30 p.m.

Sheffield Rotary Club Sponsors Student
The Sheffield Rotary Club has awarded a scholarship to Daniel Pierson to attend this year’s Rotary Outstanding Vocational Awards Program (ROVA) to be held in Sandy Lake, Pa., in March. ROVA is an intensive educational program for vocational youth leaders.
Pierson is a Sheffield High School junior who was selected because of his outstanding leadership. He participates in football, track, trap shooting, and he is currently working to obtain his Eagle Scout badge.

Sheffield Area News In Brief
Sheffield Township
Sheffield Township Supervisors met on Monday, Jan. 6 to re-organize the township. Supervisor Bulicz was sworn in to continue his next term. He is in his 3rd term as supervisor. A term is 6 years for a supervisor.
The minutes from the pre-construction meeting for Henry’s Mills Bridge were on hand to review. Construction on this bridge is to begin this month and will be completed by October. Dan Glotz of Warren County Planning and Zoning is asking the township to pass a resolution designating a portion of Route 6 as a PA Byway. The supervisors will review his email and information. This was brought up several months ago, but there were issues with signage 600 feet off the highway. The secretary will contact Glotz to review these issues prior to adoption of the resolution.
The VFW has made a very generous contribution to the playground program for the 2014 summer season. The 2014-2015 salt contract was completed through the Costars program. We have to guarantee 150 ton be delivered to our stockpile. The monthly report from the City of Warren for building permits was received with the Ruth M. Smith Center constructing a handicap ramp. Bearcat Oil Company, LLC of Sugar Grove, Brooks Whilton and ARG will all be drilling in and around our township and have filed the necessary paperwork. The 2012 Incident Reports for Howe Township fire coverage have been sent to them and the 2013 Incident Reports will be sent as soon as possible.
M & M Properties, the owners of Center Street Apartments, has notified the supervisors that Kirkpatrick Pest Control has exterminated the apartment building and they are in the process of picking up the scattered garbage and rubbish around the property and have also covered the hole where the pigeons were entering the building. They will also be fixing where the siding is falling off once the weather breaks in order to comply with the letter that they received in regards to the condition of this property. The next meeting of the supervisors will be Monday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sheffield Hospitality Center.

Be aware that if the schools are closed due to weather conditions the Center will also be closed.

For sale: Memorial or Honorary Bricks to be placed at the entry of the new elementary addition. 4×8 have 1-3 lines of engraved print, 20 characters per line without clip art or 14 with – $30 without clip art, $40 with. 8×8 have 1-6 lines of engraved print, 20 characters per line; clip art on these will be placed where the manufacturer feels it best fits with the lettering- $60 without.

There will be a Photo Fundraiser again this year at the Fire Department on April 12 and 13. They have done this every other year for the last six years They do not have a festival date set yet and are in contact with somebody in the carnival world that is trying to help us out this year. When the decision is made on their festival they will let everyone know as soon as a contract is signed. Other dates of activities may be added to this list at a later date.
Band and Choir
Students’ Fundraiser
Band and Choir students are collecting clean, gently used clothes and shoes for Goodwill from now until the end of February. Collection bins will be placed in the band room and the main office soon, or bring items in garbage bags (please don’t overload) during school or pep band hours. We will get 12 cents per pound, and many others will benefit through the process! I was amazed to find out more about the Goodwill organization; not only do they provide used items for sale, but also job training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities, sheltered workplaces, and other services for people in need. You get your closets cleaned out, we earn a little $$ and they provide employment to help others – everybody wins!

Cornhole Tournament
Second Annual Music Booster Cornhole Tournament will be on Saturday, April 5 at noon. More information will follow soon.
Allegheny Valley
Elementary School
Kindergarten registration will take place at Allegheny Valley Elementary on Feb. 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m.
Engle Family Fire
Donations for the Engle Family fire are being taken at Allegheny Valley Elementary School. Gift cards for fast food, gas, home improvement, and clothing stores are welcome. Cash donations are welcome as well. The school students are bringing donations for all household items and clothing. If anyone has any questions, they could contact the school at 723-4991.
