UNION CITY — Warren’s girls golf team entered four players into Thursday’s Bears’ Cup Championship and Kate Shippee was part of the winning team at Union City Country Club.

This unique tournament had a field of 10 high school girls’ golf teams and randomly placed girls into 4-person teams with no player playing with their own school teammates. During the 9-hole match, each team would play five holes with a scramble format, two holes with a true 4-person alternating-shot format, and two par 3 holes where every person’s score counted.

Warren’s Shippee was part of the winning team that scored a 63 with Seneca’s Kylie Bednar and Fort LeBeouf’s Kylie Lesser. Warren’s Marisa Palmieri was part of the third-place team (68), which also had Fort LeBeouf’s Cassidy Conn, Harbor Creek’s Carl Estok and Union City’s Ava Tomcho. Other Warren players competing included Warren’s Allie Lauffenberger, whose team shot a 72, and Warren’s Maelee Mandeville, whose team shot a 76.

“This was a very fun tournament designed to help players have a competitive, but less stressful, event that promotes friendship and camaraderie with other high school teams,” said Warren coach Scott Pearson. “It was nice to network with other high school coaches and set up matches for next year. This event even had a coach’s challenge in which my team didn’t win, and a cookie contest. It was a fun event and great to see some of our players have success today.”
