Five Dragons to play in Big 30 basketball event Sunday

Warren’s Braylon Barnes, Tommy Nyquist and Brady Berdine will play in the Big 30 Basketball Senior Classic on Sunday.
Five Dragons in all will play over two games this Sunday in the Big 30 Basketball Senior Classic.
Warren Area High School seniors Halle Kuzminski and Sammie Ruhlman will play for Team Pennsylvania vs. Team New York in the girls game at 2 p.m. at Portville High School. That game precedes the boys game there at 4 p.m. with Dragons Braylon Barnes, Brady Berdine and Tommy Nyquist joining PA vs. N.Y.
The games — sponsored by the Big 30 Athletic Corporation — pit 12 graduating seniors from the Pennsylvania Big 30 schools against their New York counterparts (similar to but different than the Big 30 football charities game that recently celebrated its 50-year anniversary).
There is a committee of coaches and officials that select the players, according to Dave Fuhrman, Big 30 Senior Classic chairman.
Ruhlman and Kuzminski join players on Team PA from District 9 schools Elk County Catholic, Kane, Port Allegany, Ridgway, Saint Marys, and Smethport.

“Our organization is called the Big 30 Athletic Corporation and we are actually a separate organization than the Big 30 group that puts on the Big 30 Charities Classic football game in August in Bradford,” said Fuhrman. “Our organization is a charitable organization that raises money for scholarships given to area Big 30 students and athletes. We do fund the testimonial dinner that honors the Big 30 football team which is chosen by our organization. We also fund all the awards given to Big 30 athletes and coaches by the Olean Times Herald in all sports.”
The PA Big 30 schools are Austin, Bradford, Cameron County, Coudersport, Eisenhower, Elk County Catholic, Galeton, Johnsonburg, Kane, Northern Potter, Oswayo Valley, Otto-Eldred, Port Allegany, Ridgway, Sheffield, Smethport, St. Marys, Youngsville, and Warren. The New York Big 30 schools are Andover/Whitesville, BolivarRichburg, Cuba-Rushford, Fillmore, Genesee Valley/Belfast, Houghton Academy, Scio/Friendship, Wellsville, Hinsdale, Allegany-Limestone, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Ellicottville, Franklinville, Olean, Pioneer, Portville, Randlolph, Salamanca, and New Life Christian.
“This Big 30 Senior Basketball Classic is our biggest fundraising activity,” said Fuhrman.
Team New York won both games last year, including 105-96 in the boys game and 62-60 in the girls game.
