CANONSBURG — Even more history.

After becoming the first District 10 champions ever in their respective classes, Warren seniors Kasey Kophazy and Katie Seamens are among the first to qualify for the first-ever PIAA-sanctioned girls wrestling championships.

The top four finishers in the girls PIAA Western Regional on Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School qualified for states, which will take place March 7-9 at Giant Center in Hershey. Kophazy finished fourth at 136 pounds and Seamens fourth at 148.

Sophomore teammate Jenna Kophazy was 1-2 in three tough matches. She won her first match at 118 by a 3-1 decision, then fell to the eventual champion, Anna Malevich from Butler.

“In the blood round, she lost a hard-fought 3-0 decision,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. “Only being a sophomore, she has two more opportunities.”

It was the one and only chance for Kasey Kophazy and Seamens.

“History continues to be made,” said Baldensperger. “Kasey dropped her first match by fall … then rebounded with two great wins — a 6-2 decision over (Kaitlyn) Plopi, then a 6-4 decision over (Esther) Ward to punch her ticket.

“Katie was on the next mat over at the same time,” Baldensperger added. “She made quick work of her opponent (Tiffany) Gathers, so both girls were punching their tickets at the same time. It was an awesome experience to see the girls move on. A lot of credit to Keith Kophazy and Katie’s mom and Kasey’s mom for getting these girls a lot of exposure over the past few years. They really got the ball rolling for these girls in Warren County. I like to think we just helped to finish them off. Now, we go to Hershey and try to bring back some hardware.”
