Corry hands Warren loss in softball opener

CORRY — Corry scored eight unanswered runs to move past Warren 8-3 on Thursday in the Lady Dragons’ opener.

Warren led 3-0 in the top of the third after Alana Stuart’s two-run home run over the left-field fence. Stuart also doubled off the fence in the top of the first to put runners at second and third, but Corry pitcher Sadye Dyne got out of the jam with a pop-up, strikeout and groundout without a run.

After Stuart’s homer, Alanna Warrior singled up the middle for Warren and moved to third when Alexis Jones reached on a two-base error. Emma Gray’s sacrifice fly scored Warrior for the three-run lead.

Corry answered back with three runs — one earned — in the bottom of the third, but Stuart ended the inning with a strikeout — her sixth in three innings.

Stuart finished with 10 strikeouts before being relieved with one out and one on in the bottom of the fifth inning. She left after hitting a batter and throwing two wild pitches to advance the runner to third.

Helped by two Warren errors, Corry scored three times in the inning, and the Beavers (2-0) added two more in the sixth.

Freshman Malysia Sorenson relieved Stuart in the pitching circle and reached base three times — two hits — from the leadoff spot.

Warren’s offense didn’t threaten again after Corry took the lead.

“The good thing is we have all season to work and get better,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart. “Offensively, we need to attack strikes more and that will help us not get behind in the count. Alana pitched well, had some control issues that I think came from nerves. She has a good defense behind her. She needs to relax and let them help her. Lily Devore stepped up and had a couple nice base hits for us.”

Dyne settled down for Corry, throwing a complete game with eight strikeouts.
