Lady Dragons run over Conneaut

With both teams coming in 4-0 in Region 5, Warren took control on Monday in a 52-30 win over Conneaut at Warren Area High School.

“We have a giant bulls-eye on our back,” said Warren’s Lisa LaVan, whose Dragons (12-4 overall and 5-0 in the region) won their seventh straight and snapped Conneaut’s four-game winning streak. “We are the hunted and we need to be at our best every game.”

Conneaut (11-5, 4-1) hung around, trailing by four points at halftime.

Sammie Ruhlman hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter and Alyssa Farr added another to extend Warren’s lead to eight points.

“We had a little bit of a slow start offensively,” said LaVan. “I think the girls were still coming off of their high from Saturday (win over McDowell). We settled down much more in the second (half).”

The Dragons left little doubt in a 20-6 fourth quarter. Farr had six points in the quarter, Alana Stuart five, Halle Kuzminski four, Meea Irwin three, and Ruhlman two free throws.

Lainie Harrington led Conneaut with 14 points in the game, but was held scoreless in the fourth.

“We are tough,” said LaVan. “That is why our motto is ‘Blue Collar Work.’ It is what we do. We grind. … We beat them three times last year. … Their two best players returned, so we knew they would be very good again.”

Kuzminski finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Farr 13 points, and Ruhlman 12 points and seven rebounds.

“Assists were spread around tonight,” said LaVan.
