SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Wolverines earned their first win of the year, with the help of five forfeits and two pins, defeating visiting Oswayo Valley 39-24 Wednesday evening.

At 107 pounds, Sheffield’s Juliette Morales fought hard through the first period going up 2-1 early, until Gerald Fiske was able to take a 6-2 lead into the second, where he would pin the freshman to earn the first points of the night for the Green Wave.

“She did alright, just some things she needs to clean up,” Sheffield head coach Tom Holden said of Morales. “The kid was out of position and there’s some things she could have done to take advantage of him, but we’ll go over some video with her.”

Although Holden felt Bryden Letendre had an outside chance at pulling out a win over the Green Wave’s Andrew Coriaty at 127 pounds, it wasn’t meant to be, as the Wolverine fell via pinfall in the first period to put Oswayo Valley up 12-0.

Hayden Holden then went the distance at 133 pounds with Travis Coriaty, winning 11-4 and getting the Wolverines on the board.

“That kid is a class wrestler,” Coach Holden said of Andrew Coriaty. “I knew he (Letendre) had his hands full.”

Tom Holden explained that Hayden Holden, who had been battling an illness, was pacing himself throughout the match, keeping ahead of the younger of the Coriaty brothers.

“Normally he’s all out all the time,” said Holden. “Stay in good position, get the kid out of position, take advantage of it, and repeat that.”

Following five wins by forfeit and holding onto a 33-12 lead, Trenton Mead made quick work of Oswayo Valley’s Abram Cook, pinning the junior in the first period.

The Wolverines varsity will travel to Grand Island (N.Y.) High School for a tournament on Dec. 28, before hosting Kane on Jan. 9. On Dec. 29, Sheffield’s junior high and jayvee will compete in the Paul Clough Memorial Tournament at Youngsville High School.
