ST. MARYS — Wolverines Colby Barr made his return to a muddy field following several weeks off with a flipped meniscus suffered during practice earlier in the season, but despite the Junior quarterback taking snaps again, the Sheffield was unable to recover from a Noah Cherry dominated first half, losing to Elk County Catholic on the road 24-0.

“Can’t blame it on the weather, they played on the same field we played on,” said Sheffield Head Coach Mike Barr. “We were just out of rhythm.”

Cherry was able to score Elk County’s first points on a five-yard run. Following another punt by the Wolverines, Wil Wortman finished the Crusader’s next drive driving in a 35-yard field goal to go up 10-0 just inside the second quarter.

Elk County Catholic would recover a fumbled snap on the Wolverines next drive, giving the Crusaders the ball at the 13-yard line. Following a completed Cherry pass for negative yards, the running back turned quarterback broke several Sheffield tackles to go 19 yards for the 17-0 lead. Cherry added a 37-yard touchdown run with just over five minutes left in the half to extend the lead to 24.

Cherry finished with 144 yards off 23 carries to go with his three visits to the endzone.

Colby Barr was eight of 21 for 53 yards and three interceptions on his return. Coach Barr stated that Colby was cleared Monday for practice and his final game of the season.

“That kid’s a baller,” said Coach Barr. “He fought and did everything he could do to get back on the field, but you could tell he missed a couple of weeks. Mentally on offense I think he was just a tick off, but that’s just not having those reps. He showed that he is a warrior.”

Dylan Hardwick led the Wolverine receivers with 33 yards on three receptions. Hardwick is the Wolverines only senior starter they’ll be losing going into next season.

“Dylan has the heart of the football field,” said Barr. “That’s what we need to replace, somebody that has that heart of the football field. Dylan Hardwick is an athlete from Sheffield that took a chance to do something different and come out and play football. And I will never ever forget him because of that effort. He was pro basketball when I approached him. He took that chance. He decided to do something different just to do it, and I wish more kids would follow that lead. He is a role model and that’s what we will miss.”

Hayden Holden ran for 33 yards, while Zach Barnes recorded 14.

Despite the Wolverines loss, the Barr’s defense was able to hold Cherry to just 24 yards on the ground in the second half, which he feels is where his team will pick up from next season.

“I’m very proud of our defense tonight,” said Barr. “Very proud. We had kids swarming to the ball tonight. We tried something new. If you noticed our defensive front was more of a speed defensive front, and it worked. We accomplished our goal there. We lacked in the offense tonight.”

“It’s a great springboard into the offseason,” Barr continued. “That is huge to build off of. We know the offense can move the ball and score points. “It’s all about what they want to do in the offseason. Skies the limit.”
