Cathedral Prep hands Warren 11-2 defeat
ERIE — Warren’s girls soccer team had a better second half, but fell 11-2 in a nonregion match Saturday at Cathedral Prep.
“We had the first two attacks of the game in the early minutes with the ball near the 6, but were unable to take advantage of either,” said Warren coach Mark Ordiway, whose Dragons are now 2-2 overall. “Cathedral Prep is a very talented team and I think that woke them up a bit. We had a good game plan to slow down their center striker and top scorer and we held her in check for most of the first half. Our problems were mostly in our midfield communication and their center midfielder was able to score three quick goals — two long strikes and a solid 30-yard free kick. We were able to settle things down later in the half.”
Trailing 8-0 at the half, the Dragons “looked much better in the second half,” he said. “I think we have the midfield issues worked out. This week will we reposition our defense to make us stronger in the back. Our player of the game was Lilly Stanley at right back. She was outstanding from start to finish. Her player-marking was excellent, and her ability to read passes and step into passing lanes stopped many attacks and changed possession in our favor.”
Warren scored its first goal on a hard shot from Leyna Irwin that the keeper couldn’t handle. Meea Irwin picked up the ball and ripped it in.
The Dragons’ second goal in the half was scored on a pass inside the box from Meea to Lucy Bigelow, who tucked it into the corner.
For the season, Meea and Leyna Irwin and Lucy Bigelow have combined to score 17 goals in four matches.
“We have a very tough week ahead with three road matches,” said Ordiway. “General McLane — state finalists last season, our first region game at Meadville and Harbor Creek.”
