Tarps Skunks split doubleheader in Elmira
ELMIRA, N.Y. — Jamestown has seven games remaining in its Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League regular season.
After a split of their doubleheader against Elmira on Thursday evening, the Tarp Skunks are clinging to sole possession of third place.
In the opener, Jamestown (20-14) used a six-run sixth inning to break open a close game en route to a 10-2 victory. Kasey Gilman (2-3) was brilliant on the mound, going the distance, striking out six, walking two and scattering seven hits.
Zack Kent collected two hits; Evan Fragela drove in a pair of runs; and Grady Mee, Paul Catalano and Jake Kernodle each had an RBI.
Erik Berkan (0-1) took the loss for the Pioneers (23-13). John Schroeder collected three hits and drove in a run, and Cooper Smith added a double and an RBI to pace Elmira’s offensive attack.
The second game was tied 1-1 through four innings, but the hosts exploded for four runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth to win 11-1.
Schroder drove in three runs, Kam Levesque had two hits and two RBIs and Spencer Aubin drove in a pair for the Pioneers, who finished with nine hits off four Jamestown pitchers.
Peyton Ahlstrom (0-1) took the loss, working the first four innings and surrendering seven hits and five runs (three earned), striking out four and walking two.
The Tarp Skunks managed just four hits against Gardner Meeks (4-1), who struck out eight and walked three in a complete-game performance. His earned run average is 1.24 on the season.
Jamestown opened the scoring with a run in the second inning, but Elmira tied it in the third, and then blew the game open from there.
The Tarp Skunks are off today and travel to Niagara (18-15) on Saturday. They return home for a doubleheader on Sunday against Auburn (18-16). The first game starts at 5 p.m.
