A pair of former Jamestown Jammers took the next step in their respective professional baseball careers earlier this month.
Chris Vallimont, who pitched for the Jammers during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, made his Major League debut with the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium on July 3.
Ryan Boyer, who pitched for the Jammers during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, made his Triple-A debut with the Buffalo Bisons at Sahlen Field on July 6.
Baltimore selected Vallimont’s contract from the Triple-A Norfolk Tides on July 1, which was just the start of a whirlwind week for the 2018 Mercyhurst University product.
Vallimont made his Major League debut during the Orioles’ 6-3 loss to New York. With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, trailing by three runs, Vallimont relieved Danny Coulombe. He allowed a double to Isiah Kiner-Falefa, but Baltimore was able to throw out the Yankees’ left fielder attempting to get to third base on the play. Vallimont followed with a strikeout of New York’s rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe.

Following the game, the 6-foot-5 right-hander, who was a fifth-round pick of the Miami Marlins in 2018, was assigned back to Triple-A and eventually designated for assignment. That put the wheels in motion for the Cleveland Guardians to acquire the Erie, Pennsylvania native in a trade for cash considerations on July 6.
The Guardians then assigned Vallimont to their Triple-A club, the Columbus Clippers. He did not appear in the final few games of a series with the Nashville Sounds. Columbus returns to action today as it starts a three-game home series against the Iowa Cubs.
In five minor league seasons, Vallimont has pitched in 97 games, including 85 starts, and has a 22-32 record with a 4.89 earned run average. After being drafted by the Marlins, he was traded along with Sergio Romo to the Minnesota Twins in 2019 for Lewin Diaz. In 2022, when the Twins designated Vallimont for assignment, he was claimed by the Orioles.
Vallimont started four games for the Jammers in the summer of 2016, going 1-1 with a 1.44 ERA. He struck out 31 in 25 innings and allowed just 14 hits. The following summer, he went 1-0 in five games with a 4.30 ERA, striking out 36 in 23 innings.
The Toronto Blue Jays assigned Boyer to the Bisons on July 6 after he was previously pitching for the Vancouver Canadians. That day, Boyer entered in the bottom of the fifth inning with Buffalo leading the Rochester Red Wings 3-0.
After back-to-back walks to open his first inning, Boyer induced a double play and then got a fly out to center field to keep the game 3-0. His second inning didn’t go so well. After hitting the leadoff batter in the bottom of the sixth inning, Boyer uncorked a wild pitch before two more walks loaded the bases with no outs. Travis Blankenhorn then took Boyer deep for a grand slam that gave Rochester a 4-3 lead.
The Bisons tied the game in the top of the seventh inning taking Boyer off the hook for a loss, but the Red Wings eventually won the game 7-4. Boyer has not pitched since that game. Buffalo opens a three-game series at home against the Toledo Mud Hens tonight.
The Blue Jays signed Boyer to a minor league contract in January of 2022. In two seasons between four different levels of the minor leagues, the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and Canisius College product is 5-0 with a 3.71 ERA. In 35 appearances covering 43 2/3 innings, he has struck out 62 and held opponents to a .192 batting average.
In the summer of 2018, Boyer appeared in 23 games for the Jammers, going 7-0 with eight saves. The Bradford, Pennsylvania native struck out 49 in 31 2/3 innings, pitching to a 1.42 ERA. The previous summer, Boyer pitched in 11 games, striking out 26 in 22 1/3 innings while pitching to a 2.42 ERA.
