JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Kasey Gilman pitched a gem in Game 1 of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Batavia.

It was just what Jamestown coach Jordan Basile was looking for.

Gilman, a right-hander from Princeton University, scattered seven hits, struck out seven and walked one in a complete-game performance.

In combination with a six-run fourth inning, it was more than enough to send the Tarp Skunks to a 9-2 victory over Batavia at Diethrick Park.

“He worked quick, he threw strikes, his velocity was up and, not only that, every pitch was moving,” Basile said. “He threw a great game. To be able to go all seven, that can only help your pitching staff, so that was a great job by Kasey.”

The Muckdogs avoided the sweep, however, by knocking off Jamestown 7-2 in the nightcap.

Leading 1-0 after three innings in the opener, the Tarp Skunks rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fourth off losing pitcher Ty Woods (1-1), highlighted by a pair of run-scoring singles by Tommy Googins and Matthew Best, bases-loaded walks to Zack Kent and Grady Mee and two Batavia errors.

Jamestown tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Matt Thompson led off with a double, Paul Catalano followed with an RBI single and Googins walked and came around to score on a double steal.

Armed with a 9-0 lead, Gilman yielded a pair of runs in the top of the seventh — the game’s final inning — on an RBI single by Trey Bacon and a hit batter. But Gilman struck out the final batter to end the game and give the Tarp Skunks their first home win against the Muckdogs since the 2021 season.

“We put the bat on the ball, and that’s been our approach in batting practice, trying to use the whole field,” Basile said. “We saw some results in that first game.”

Thompson (double), Catalano (double) and Best all had two hits for Jamestown.

James Aselta had a pair of singles for the Muckdogs.

In the nightcap, left-hander Rijnaldo Euson ran his record to 2-0, scattering four hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings. The junior from Georgia Southwestern State struck out eight and walked two in his second impressive performance against the Tarp Skunks this season.

“His fastball just seems to get on you, he keeps it up in the zone and there are a lot of late swings,” Basile said. “He also does a good job of holding runners.”

Evan Chaffee took the loss for Jamestown, surrendering seven runs (four earned) in three innings of work.

“He didn’t have his best stuff today,” Basile said of the left-hander from Hamburg. He was lights-out his last relief appearance at Niagara, but he’s also in the middle of transferring from Alabama, too. He had some coaches here watching him. Virginia Tech was here watching, so it might be a little added pressure.”

The big inning for the Muckdogs was the second when they scored four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run over the left-field fence by Anthony Calabro to push their lead to 5-1.

Batavia (9-7) added two more runs in the third and cruised the rest of the way.

Calabro finished with two hits and four RBIs; Brice Mortillaro also had two hits and drove in a run; and Caleb Rodriguez collected a pair of RBIs.

For Jamestown (7-5), Grady Mee and Thompson (two RBIs) both had two hits, and Drew Garth added a triple.

NOTES: The doubleheader drew a crowd of 1,148. … The Tarp Skunks travel to Batavia tonight and Niagara on Friday before returning home for games against Newark on Saturday and Niagara on Sunday. Saturday’s game is at 6:30 p.m., while Sunday’s first pitch will be at 2 p.m.
