D10 playoff schedules set

Warren softball quarterfinal is Tuesday; Youngsville baseball has bye into semifinal

Youngsville baseball and Warren softball were selected to participate in the District 10 playoffs next week.

Youngsville’s baseball team will receive a bye into the D10 Class 1A playoff semifinals on Thursday, May 23, at a site and time to be determined.

The Eagles are the No. 2 seed in a six-team bracket after a 15-4 regular season that included a second-place finish in Region 3 at 12-4. Region 3 champ Saegertown (17-2 overall and 15-1 in the region) is the top seed and received the bye on the other side of the bracket.

Youngsville will play the winner of Monday’s quarterfinal game between No. 3 West Middlesex (7-11) and No. 6 Cochranton (7-10) at 1 p.m. at Thiel College. Youngsville beat Cochranton twice — 3-1 and 8-5 — within Region 2, but didn’t play West Middlesex. West Middlesex did play Cochranton, however, winning 3-1 on May 7.

Youngsville lost to West Middlesex in last season’s D10 1A semifinals, finishing 16-5 and graduating three seniors from that group.

On the other side of the 1A baseball bracket, Saegertown will play the winner of Monday’s quarterfinal between No. 4 Union City (9-8) and No. 5 Cambridge Springs (8-9) at 2 p.m. at Allegheny College. The other semifinal is also scheduled for Thursday, May 23.

Warren softball will open in the D10 4A quarterfinal round against Hickory at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at Slippery Rock University. The Dragons are the No. 6 seed in the six-team playoff bracket with the Hornets seeded third.

Warren is 6-11 overall, but winners of four of its last five games to end the regular season. Hickory (11-8) has won three of its last four.

The Warren-Hickory winner will meet No. 2 Meadville (14-3 overall and tied atop Warren’s Region 5 with Cathedral Prep at 14-2) on Thursday at a site and time to be determined.

On the other side of the 4A bracket, top-seeded Prep (14-6) receives the bye and will wait for the winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal between No. 4 Conneaut (7-10) and No. 5 Franklin (11-9), which play at noon at Allegheny College.
