Warren athletes excel in Altoona
ALTOONA — Warren track coach Kevin Dustin was busy for several hours Friday at the Beaty Junior High Track Invitational at War Memorial Field. That didn’t stop him from checking live results posted from the Altoona Mountain Lion Track & Field Classic at Mansion Park Stadium nearly three hours away.
“I’m pumped with the crew that went down today,” said Dustin. “I’ve been live-tracking it.”
In the Class AA Small School division, freshman Lilly Newton won the 400 meters in 1:01.04. There were 25 in the event. Newton was third of 26 in high jump at 4-10, and had a personal-best time of 27.20 in the 200 meters for fifth-place finish in the finals.
Lindsay Madigan’s 13.09 seconds in the 100 meters was good for sixth out of 41. She qualified with a personal-best 13.06 in the preliminaries.
Other highlights included teammates Shyann Rulander and Morgan Alexander both finishing sub-12 minutes in the 3,200 meters. Rulander, a senior, was sixth of 25 in 11:51.04, and the freshman Alexander eighth in 11:58.01. Both times are personal bests.
For the Dragon boys, Sam Lindell finished in third place out of 30 in the 3,200 meters in a personal-best 10:09.25. Teammate Matt Sowa was 17th of 44 in the mile (1,600 meters) in a personal-best 4:56.27.
“Those are highlights, but all the kids did well,” said Dustin.
