Erie fought off Warren’s boys basketball team on Thursday in a 75-62 nonregion win at Warren Area High School.

The Class 4A Dragons hung with the Class 6A Royals through three quarters before a 24-11 Erie fourth quarter was the difference.

“The final score doesn’t indicate how well I thought we played,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 6-4 overall. Erie is 6-6.

“Once again, we made a few mistakes,” said Berdine. “We had nine turnovers in the first half and we really want that to be our total for the game. I thought we had a couple opportunities in the first half to get a lead and didn’t really capitalize on them.”

Warren and Erie were tied 40-40 at halftime. Parks Ordiway hit two 3-pointers and scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half. Barnes added 8 of his 14 points and Nyquist 8 of his 11 in the half.

“We split with them this summer so we know we’re capable of beating them,” said Berdine. “Some of the things we don’t do well as a group — rotate to help, putting a body on people, boxing out and not trying to out-jump teams — works against a lot of teams. It’s not going to work against a team like Erie.”

Layveon Gore scored 8 fourth-quarter points and led Erie with 24.

Erie held Warren to 4 field goals in the final 8 minutes.

“It just takes a couple stops … and it went from a three-point lead (for Erie) to a seven-point lead,” said Berdine.

Brady Berdine contributed 10 points and Owen Becker 8 for Warren, which travels to DuBois on Saturday.

Earlier Thursday, Chase Sitler led Warren’s junior varsity team with 26 points, and Jacob McMeans scored all 12 of his points in the second half, in a 50-40 win over Erie.
