Cathedral Prep comes from behind to beat Warren 60-51
Cathedral Prep rebounded from a 13-point deficit to hand Warren a 60-51 nonregion defeat Saturday at Warren Area High School.
Tommy Nyquist scored 10 points and Parks Ordiway 9 — combining for five 3-pointers — in a 21-11 Warren first-quarter lead. The Dragons, after Ordiway’s fourth 3, led 24-11 early in the second.
Prep (11-4 overall) kept chipping away, and Warren led by just three at halftime 28-25.
“Like I told the kids, they realized that they were in for a dogfight and they were able to turn their defense up a little bit,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “They got more aggressive with our guards and we struggled a little bit with it at times. I think they had a stretch in the third quarter where (Nick Lydic) scored 11 straight points and we went three empty possessions in a row during that 11-0 run, and that really was the difference in the game.”
Prep outscored Warren 20-8 in the third. Warren cut the lead to within two possessions late in the fourth before the Ramblers pulled away for good.
Prep also let Warren hang around with a 12-for-25 day at the free-throw line.
“Once again, when you step out of conference or region play, you want to have some good games mixed in there, and our nonregion schedule this year with DuBois, Prep, Erie High, Seneca — those are playoff teams,” said Berdine. “That’s what we’re looking for. This was a game scheduled earlier in the year, and because of some COVID issues, got pushed back. It was a good opportunity for us to put some work in.”
Lydic led Prep with 17 points. Nyquist finished with 19 points for Warren (9-6) and Ordiway 14, with Prep snapping the Dragons’ four-game winning streak.
Brady Berdine’s 24 points — 16 in the first half — led Warren’s junior varsity team to a 42-34 victory earlier Saturday.
