Villa Maria eliminates Warren
MEADVILLE — Warren had a successful season, but couldn’t get past top-seeded Villa Maria on Thursday in the District 10 3A volleyball playoff semifinals Thursday.
Senior Katie Madigan had quite a night, finishing with 22 kills and 20 digs, but the Dragons run ended, 25-21, 21-25, 13-25 and 8-25.
Madigan finishes as Warren’s all-time leader in digs with more than1,300 for her career, and with 375 kills this season — the second most in a single season — in her first year as an attacker.
Senior setter Halee Mineweaser had 39 assists and eight digs. She finishes her career with more than1,100 assists and 100 aces. Senior Ellee Irwin added five kills and 10 digs.
“We started out playing some great volleyball the first two sets, with very few breakdowns,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan. “Those sets were very competitive, but unfortunately we weren’t able to keep it clean the rest of the way and Villa, being a very good team, took advantage of that and asserted themselves at the net and gained a lot of momentum. Our effort was terrific, like always, and we played some inspired defense, but they just had a little too much firepower for us tonight. Our seniors, Halee, Katie and Ellee, were terrific leaders and players tonight and all season. Each one has developed into such great volleyball players and have left their mark on the team.”
Summer Lucks led the team with 22 digs, and Carly Beers and Kylie Fehlman added nine kills each in the loss.
“This season saw this team play some really great volleyball at times against the best competition, winning the 16-team Fort LeBoeuf tournament and winning five straight in October to secure the region championship,” said Dolan.
Warren took Villa to five sets in a regular-season loss.
