Dragons hang around

Harbor Creek dominates final two innings in 8-0 victory

Swanson is being congratulated for a diving catch of a sinking line drive into left-center field to keep a Region 5 battle with Harbor Creek scoreless. The Huskies would score one in the sixth and seven in the seventh to win 8-0 Tuesday at Legion Field.

Warren had the bases loaded and no outs late in a one-run game against Harbor Creek, but couldn’t capitalize, and the Huskies pulled away for an 8-0 win.

After a rainout on Monday, the visiting Huskies traveled to Warren on Tuesday at 7-0 overall and 3-0 and in first place in Region 5. The Dragons were also unbeaten at 3-0 and 2-0, respectively.

Ethan Wilson pitched a gem for Warren. He didn’t allow a run and just two hits over the first five innings before a sacrifice fly in his sixth-and-final inning gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

“Wilson pitched a great game and gave us a chance to win,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton, “and we just didn’t hit.”

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Warren loaded the bases. Micah Passmore reached and advanced to second on an infield error, then moved to third on a ringing base hit to center by Ben Berdine. James Swanson walked on a full count, and the Huskies tall, lefty starter Cody Smith was in trouble for the first time.

With the infield in, JT Blum’s hard-hit grounder went right to the second baseman, who forced Passmore out at the plate. Smith struck out Alex Borger and Wilson to end the frame with three stranded.

“We just needed to get the run,” said Eaton. “Ben (Berdine) knew he was pitching if we got the lead; we just didn’t get the lead.”

As it turned out, Harbor Creek would add seven runs in the seventh, helped by three walks and two Warren errors. Archie Teconchuk had two consecutive saves in Warren’s three wins but didn’t have any luck this turn in relief (four runs were earned).

Still, Eaton said it wouldn’t have mattered as the Dragons didn’t score.

“We have to come back strong at General McLane (on Wednesday),” said Eaton.

Passmore, Berdine, and Dylan Maeder had Warren’s only hits; Smith struck out 13 and walked three for Harbor Creek (8-0, 4-0) over 6 2/3 innings. His brother, Casey Smith, got the last out and had two of the Huskies’ seven hits in the game.

Carson Farr was 2 for 2 for Warren in a 9-3 three-inning jayvee loss.
