Warren County School District leaves sports ‘on the table’

Warren County School District is going full-virtual today, but the possibility of winter sports has not been ruled out.

The board approved a motion that would move to a full-virtual instruction environment.

Athletics was left on the table along with the possibility of some students attending in person and some students receiving online instruction at the buildings.

“Athletics are very important to people,” Superintendent Amy Stewart said.

Some board members argued against allowing athletics.

“I want to close any doors possible, including athletics, that could open up cases in the community,” board member Joe Colosimo said.

“I think if you’re going to see it anywhere, it’s going to be with athletics,” board member Marcy Morgan said.

District Solicitor Chris Byham advised the board that Stewart would be able to shut down athletics if circumstances called for that change.

“The athletic plans give Amy the discretion to do whatever she feels necessary,” Byham said. “If the board wants to give some sort of directive… otherwise, the athletic plan gives Amy the discretion.”

The board voted 6-to-3 in favor of the motion that leaves athletics on the table, with Colosimo, Mary Passinger, and Elizabeth Huffman voting against.

There was no guarantee that sports seasons would be held. Stewart said she did not know how decisions about sports would go.

Starting at $3.50/week.
