Miley wins Litz Memorial at Eriez Speedway

HAMMETT– Eriez Speedway remembered one of its pioneer racers Saturday night.

Dick Litz, driver of the famed No. 29, was a fan-favorite the entire time he raced and was the 1983 Eriez Speedway Late Model Champion.

The Litz Memorial was for 29 laps and paid $2,900 to win with $290 to start the feature. At the end of the ULMS-sanctioned Mill Run Collision Super Late Model feature, it was Pittsburgh’s Jared Miley scoring the win. Meanwhile, 2018 champion Jason Genco recorded the win in the Nic Dit Trucking RUSH Late Model feature, his 27th win since teaming with car-owner Jason Badgley. Adam Ashcroft collected his first-ever Eriez Speedway win in the Waterford Hotel Outlaw Modified feature. Jarett Young was awarded the Johnson’s Car Care and Collision Economod finale after apparent winner Brody Hill was stripped of the win in post-race inspection due to an illegal piece of equipment. Defending Curtze Food Service champion John Boardman prevailed in their finale. Mark Lawrence won the L & D Tree Service Challengers feature.

The Waterford Hotel Outlaw Modifieds were the first feature to take the green with yellow before all the cars had passed the start line when Jimmy Diabo spun in turn four as the leaders got to turn one. When the race got going it was outside front row starter Adam Ashcroft leading the way through lap one over Randy Hall, with Brent Rhebergen and pole-sitter Mark Titus even for third. Jarett Young was fifth.

At the end of the first lap Zack Johnson spun off the main straight to the infield, slowing the event under yellow. The event restarted with Mike Eschrich up to fifth. Johnson pitted with a flat right front. After two laps it was Ashcroft, Rhebergen, Hall, Eschrich, and Titus. Eschrich took over third at lap four and was even with Hall at five laps when caution was shown for Hunter Hulley and Diabo, against the turn three wall. At green it was a side by side duel for the lead with Ashcroft inside and Rhebergen outside until yellow was again shown for Tim Peterson, Brady Westfall, Dave Lamphere, Tim Rockwell, and Butch Southwell, who were all stopped in turn one. Westfall spun again at lap eight in turn four with Rockwell spinning in turn three a lap later. Then, at turn one on the restart, second-running Steve Rex spun, with Peterson and Diabo caught up in the caution. The halfway order was Ashcroft, Rhebergen, Eschrich, Hall, and Ken Zimmer. Zimmer advanced to fourth with six to go and Mike McGee to fifth with five to go. One more caution appeared with three to go when Lamphere spun directly in front of Ashcroft as he was getting ready to put him a lap down. Ashcroft avoided contact, then went on to the win over Rhebergen, McGee, Eschrich, and Zimmer.

Next up was the Curtze Food Service Street Stock feature with Shane Applebee and Michael Reed leading the way.

Applebee led lap one over defending champion John Boardman, Reed, Douglas Eck, and Jason Covey, but Brent Crandall got into the front straight wall right at the line. On the restart, Boardman immediately was challenging for the lead. The race was slowed again at lap three when David Schauers stopped in turn one. At halfway Boardman was leading after taking over at lap five. Applebee, Reed, Steve Yokum, and Eck filled out the top five. Eckart came to fourth a lap past halfway. Yellow was shown again at lap eight for Lonnie Waldron, spun in turn four. At green Reed took over second then Eck spun in turn two. With five to go Boardman was leading Applebee, and Reed with Jimmy Kennerknecht and Steve Yokum side by side for fourth. At the checkers it was Boardman with Applebee narrowly edging out Reed for second, Yokum fourth, and Kennerknecht fifth.

The Rush Late Models were brought to Mark Matthews’ green flag by former champion Kyle Zimmerman and D J Krug, but yellow was out at turn one when Dylan Goodman, Darrin Waldron, and Krug had problems. On the restart, again in turn one, it was Brad Stoeger and Goodman with problems. Under the yellow, Stoeger pitted. The order for the restart was Zimmerman, Jason Genco, both former champions, John Woodward, Darrell Bossard, another former champion, and Matt Latta. Zimmerman led to lap two when Brian Larson and Chad Clement spun in turn two. On the restart, Matthews determined that Zimmerman “jumped” the start and penalized him a row. It was then Genco, Zimmerman, Brandon Porter, and Bossard, with Woodward and Latta side by side for fifth.

After a yellow on lap four for Josh Beckstrom, Latta advanced to third and Breyton Santee came to fourth at lap six. Beckstrom spun again at seven. Latta was second lap eight. Paul Norman was the next caution at lap nine on the front straight. The front five at halfway were Genco, Latta, Zimmerman, Santee, and Scott Gurdak. Beckstrom spun again at 12 laps, his third of the event, getting him sent pitside. Santee and Brian Larson were side by side for fourth at thirteen laps with Santee holding the spot at 14. Bossard was fifth at sixteen with Latta challenging for the lead at 17. With the white flag flying, Goodman spun in turn one, then second-running Latta spun in two, after yellow had been called. With yellow already shown, Latta was restarted in second. Under the yellow Santee had a tire losing air, so was ordered by the flagman to the pit. At the finish it was Genco, Latta, Zimmerman, Gurdak, and Darrell Bossard.

The Johnson’s Car Care and Collision Economod feature was next with cousins Nate Young and Jarett Young on the front row. Nate Young led to turn one, but then uncharacteristically spun with Cody Stronghart, Todd Miller, Brad Boyd, Zack Lenart, and Jason Brightman all managing to spin or stopped to avoid contact. Nate Young then pitted but rejoined the race before green was shown again. On the next attempt to race, the red flag was necessary when Donald May got into the front straight wall and flipped his racer. He was OK. For the next try it was now Jarett Young and Brody Hill at the fore. Hill got the lead over Young, Matt Alexander, Garrett Calvert, and Stu Rickard. That was still the order when Tyler Davis spun at lap six. By the halfway point Bob Vogt had advanced to fifth from 14th on the grid. Calvert and Alexander were even at the line for third at lap eight with Calvert holding at at nine. With one lap left, Stronghart, Andrew Pisarchick, and Brad Boyd got together at turn two, setting up a one-lap dash to the checkers. Hill was the first to cross the line but was deemed illegal in post race inspection, handing the win to Jarett Young over Calvert, Nate Young (coming all the way from the back after caution at lap one), Vogt, and Alexander.

The main event of the night was the ULMS sanctioned 29-lap feature for the Mill Run Collision Super Late Models. After time trials, heat races, and a B-main were run, Jared Miley and Mike Knight were on the front row of the 24-car field. At the end of one lap Miley and Knight were side by side for the lead with Knight showing a slight advantage. Dutch Davies, David Scott, and Chris Hackett filled out the top five. By lap five it was Miley, Knight, Davies, David Scott, and Hess Jr. At nine laps Davies and Scott were side by side for second. The leaders were into lapped traffic at 10 laps with Miley and Knight racing side by side through the slower traffic at the rear of the field. Miley had the lead to himself at 13 laps. Halfway saw Miley leading Knight and Davies, with David Scott and Hess now side by side fighting for fourth. At 20 complete it was still Miley over Knight, with Hess now third, Scott fourth, and Breyton Santee fifth. Dave Lyon spun at turn two with four laps left, the only caution of the event. For the restart it was Miley, Knight, Hess, Scott, and now Greg Oakes fifth. That was the finishing order.

The L & D Challenger feature started with Charles McClintock and Jonathan Seekings at the front, but yellow brought a complete restart when Brandon Hall, Todd Hanlon, Holden Heineman, and Jeff Nunemaker wrecked in turn two. Hall was the only one able to remain on the track for the restart. At green Seekings led to turn three when McClintock took over, but it was Chris Horton in front when lap one was complete, over Seekings, Nick Eck, Zack Eller, and Mark Winans. Eller came to second on lap two while Eck slipped back to fifth. Yellow was shown at two laps when Seekings got sideways in turn one. For green it was now sixth starting Horton, eighth starting Eller, third starting Winans, fourth starting Eck, and Mark Lawrence, up from 10th on the grid. At the end of three Lawrence was second. Another yellow, this time for Kevin Covell, Mitchell Rex, and Winans in turn one, slowed the race. On the green Lawrence shot to the lead, but Horton battled back to run side by side for the lead at four with Lawrence having a slight lead. Horton held a narrow lead at the end of five, but Lawrence retook the spot at lap six and held it to the end, followed by Horton, Brandon Huffman, who came to the spot at the white flag, Wes Stull, and Eller.
