Lady Knights, Eagles suffer tough losses

For the first 16 minutes of Friday’s game against visiting Maplewood, Eisenhower was able to match the Tigers intensity and drive.

Unfortunately for the Lady Knights, they couldn’t sustain that intensity through the second half as Maplewood pulled away for a 69-37 Region 2 win.

“We came out and played very well in the first quarter, probably the best we’ve played all year,” Eisenhower coach Mike Logue said. “It carried over to the second quarter, but at halftime, we wore down. We had a little foul trouble and an injury. Just a little bit of everything pile on us and we weren’t able to match their intensity in the second half like we were in the first.”

Maplewood (6-1 overall, 5-0 Region 2) scored 19 points in the first quarter, but Eisenhower (2-4, 1-3) nearly matched by putting in 14 of its own. The Tigers outscored the Knights, 15-9 in the second quarter for a 34-25 halftime lead.

While the Tigers were able to score another 35 points in the second half, the Knights could only get 12.

Defensively, the Knights held the Tigers’ leading scorer, Jordan Roser (15.67 ppg), to just nine points in the game.

“Roser is one of the best players in the region and hit over 70 3-pointers last year,” Logue said. “We focused on shutting her down. Angeles Jareno matched up with her and basically shut her out in the second half.”

Other Tigers were able to take on the scoring load as three players finished in double digits. Sadie Thomas led the way with 15 points, while Isabella Eimer added 13 and Liliane Moorhead had 11.

“We shut (Roser) down, but we need to stop everybody else too,” Logue said.

Emiley Wheeler and Lily Renninger each had double-doubles for the Knights. Wheeler had a game-high 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Renninger added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

“We knew that (Lily) is capable of that, it was a matter of her wanting to do it, putting in the time and hard work to do it,” Logue said. “She’s getting better in each game and still has a lot of potential left.”

The Knights are off until Friday when they will compete in the Kane Holiday Tournament. Eisenhower opens play Friday against Kane.

COCHRANTON 61, YOUNGSVILLE 33

Cochranton outscored Youngsvile 26-3 in the second quarter en route to a 61-33, Region 2 win in Youngsville Friday.

The Eagles (3-3 overall, 2-2 Region 2) held the Cardinals’ (4-3, 3-2) leading scorer, Lexie Moore (12.86 ppg), without a point in the first quarter. Moore exploded for 13 in the second quarter to help Cochranton pull away.

“We held their leading scorer to nothing in the first quarter and three in the third,” Youngsville assistant coach Troy Weissinger said. “But they spread the floor in the second and we did not help on the weak side. Second chances and no weak side rebounding killed us.”

Moore finished with a game-high 16 points.

Sadie Hoffman led the Eagles with 13 points, while Kenzie Olewine added nine and Mallory Sherrard had six in the loss.

Youngsville travels to Union City Monday.
