Lady Dragons set for next step in historic season

Warren battles Thomas Jefferson in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals on Saturday.

By now, you know the names and the faces that have put together the best season in Warren volleyball history.

The Dragons (19-0) have no intention of slowing down, as they meet a talented Thomas Jefferson team in the Class 3A state quarterfinals today at Punxsutawney High School (1:30 p.m.).

Warren trailed early in its first round state matchup against Central Valley, but shook it off to do what they have done almost every time they’ve taken the court this season – win 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-17).

Often when teams get to this level of states, they find that common opponents are non-existent.

That’s not the case here.

Thomas Jefferson is coming off a 3-0 win over DuBois (25-16, 25-21, 25-19) in its state opener on Tuesday, the same DuBois team that Warren beat 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-20) to close out its regular season.

Warren, of course, is led by seniors Lydia Latimer (middle), Celia Chase (outside), Ellie Lobdell (right side) and Julia Lobdell (libero), juniors Lex Nyquist (setter), Grace Wortman (outside) and sophomore Jordan Sitler (middle).

Sitler has really come on when it matters the most, notching back-to-back matches of career-highs in kills against Conneaut and Central Valley, giving Warren a potent 1-2 punch in the middle with Latimer.

It’s a lethal offensive attack, with Chase, Ellie Lobdell and Wortman teaming with Latimer and Sitler for a dangerous collection of hitters.

It all starts with Nyquist, the quarterback of the offense from her setter position, who has had a phenomenal season on her way to the single-season and career marks for assists in program history.

Julia Lobdell is a steady, calming influence on the court and a great defensive player, who, like Sitler, has played her best volleyball as of late.

“We’re just going to stay the course ,” said Warren head coach Mike Dolan after the win over Central Valley. “We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing.”

Like Warren, TJ advanced to their district title match (District 7/WPIAL). There, they dropped a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-21) decision to defending state champion Knoch, winners of 47-straight.

The Lady Jags, who are located about 10 miles south from downtown Pittsburgh, just off of Route 51, finished tied for first with Laurel Highlands in the WPIAL Section 3-AAA.

Their regular season included two wins over Elizabeth Forward, who Knoch beat in a tough 4-set battle in their PIAA opener.

TJ has also gone 75-3 in section play over the past six seasons.

They are lead by junior outside hitter Ashleigh Haines, junior middle Tyler Turk, libero Sydney Moran, Kaitlyn Urbanowicz and Natasha Yanief.

Turk had eight kills and a pair of blocks in the win over DuBois, while Urbanowicz, Haines and Yanief had six kills each.

The winner will meet the winner of Knoch and Dover in the PIAA semifinals.

The two quarterfinals on the other side of the bracket feature Villa Maria Academy vs. Allentown Central Catholic and West York vs. Pope John Paul II.

Warren-TJ is the second of four matchups at Punxsutawney today, which feature two other District 10 teams and another from D-9.

Corry battles Bald Eagle in Class 2A at noon to get things started and, after Warren-TJ, Cochranton takes on Bishop Carroll at 3:30, followed by Clarion vs. Northern Cambria, both in Class A.
