Our opinion: Consider after-school programs

Most complaints about after-school programs center on lack of available slots because the programs can’t find enough staff.

That isn’t a problem in Warren County, where there is no wait list for after-school programs offered through the Warren County School District. In addition to all WCSD schools, after-school programs are offered at the Tidioute Community Charter School.

The program has plenty of staff thanks to a bump in starting pay. The additional staff mean, nearly two months into the school year, there are still 16 open spots for elementary school students and another 62 open spots for middle school students. The lack of interest among middle-schools is a shame, because that part of the program will likely be cut if the program doesn’t reach a state-required attendance level.

The after-school program focuses on helping students with their homework, strengthening their reading and math skills and encouraging them to explore STEM and STEAM activities. Middle-schoolers begin an early discussion of college and careers through guest speakers.

There’s been a lot of talk about learning loss after the disruption to education caused by COVID-19. We often hear about the struggles of working parents to find affordable child care so they can work. After-school programs can help solve both problems – but only if we use them.

Starting at $3.50/week.
