Our opinion: Setting a positive tone for 2023

How wonderful, to be presented with another New Year – another occasion on which many of us choose to attempt a fresh start. How fortunate we are to live in a nation where such reinvention is possible, for so many.

But as we prepare to celebrate the chance for change, let us not forget our responsibility not only to change, but to do better. Let us remember the optimism we shared on Jan. 1, 2022, and try our best to achieve the goals we set for ourselves, our families, our communities and our country. Remember, we were going to beat a virus that has now killed more than 820,000 Americans. We were going to heal divisions, be compassionate. We were all in this together, and the America that emerged was going to be the best version yet.

It feels harder to stir up that kind of hope this time around, doesn’t it? But when has a tougher challenge ever made us turn tail before?

So, rather than giving in to anger and frustration, let us in 2023 make room for hope. You’ve heard it said “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” a condensed version of what Mahatma Gandhi actually said. The beginning of this new year is the time to start.

Rather than giving in to our worst instincts, in 2023 let us strive to live each day as the best version of ourselves.

The opportunity is there, folks. We just need to decide we want to take advantage of it. As we prepare for the day of open doors and new beginnings, we should do just that.

Happy New Year!
