Our opinion: Brick House project worth funding
Warren Redevelopment Authority members have done the right thing in approving a loan of up to $275,000 to help preserve the former Brick House building on Liberty Street.
Tom Christenson, whose DewBoi Properties firm has proposed the Wendelboe Hotel, an 18-room boutique hotel in the former Watt Office Building next to the former Brick House, wants to stabilize the derelect Brick House so that it doesn’t harm his hotel project.
While formal plans aren’t finalized yet, Christenson proposes having the Brick House be part of the hotel project in some form. Immediately, Christenson said the back of the building needs to be demolished after a large hole in the roof led that part of the building to deterioriate.
The authority’s funding will pay roughly one-third of the $675,000 project. It’s a heavy lift for the authority’s revolving loan fund, which had $301,733 before the loan Brick Street loan approval. But, frankly, it’s the most feasible use of the former Brick House to come up in a while and a good use of the city’s money.
