Third St. bridge renaming draws a crowd
WARREN – A crowd packed the City Council meeting on Monday night due to a request to rename the Third Avenue bridge.
There were around 50 people in attendance at the meeting, requiring extra seating.
Joseph Perrin originally submitted the request of renaming the bridge the “Freedom Bridge” in remembrance of Charlie Kirk. During the public hearing, Perrin shared that no funding would be needed from the city and he would fulfill all payments needed to rename the bridge.
“I want to engage the community and encourage discussion and civic engagement. I believe I have been successful in that,” said Perrin.
He also shared that 150 people have reached out to him in support.
Many other residents shared their thoughts on the renaming as well as other potential ideas.
Veteran Judy Melton suggested naming the bridge after the Blue Star Mothers, women whose children have served in the military. Melton also shared that no money or tax dollars would be needed from the city, as she has already contacted several local businesses willing to donate to the cause.
Douglas Kearn also spoke to the council about his opinions on the renaming.
“I believe the new name should honor someone uniquely Warren,” Douglas said. “A bridge’s name should remind us who we are.”
Renaming the bridge has not yet been discussed by the council. Mayor David Wortman said they would do so at the City Council meeting in December.
