Public safety issues discussed at commissioner’s meeting

A couple of public safety-related items highlighted a short Warren County Commissioners meeting this week.

The first focused on public notification in the event of severe weather.

Lanae Shubert, a Six Mile Rd. resident, raised concern to the commissioners that receiving urgent notices at her residence is a challenge when the internet is knocked out.

She recounted one specific storm that sheared trees and spread debris in her neighborhood.

“There was no warning,” she said. “Nothing for people who live on the outskirts.”

Public Safety Director Ken McCorrison said all citizens have access to the same system where the 911 Center receives its warnings — ready.pa.org.

“They have a code red system,” he said, “that alerts on a cell phone. … It’s very simple.”

McCorrison also highlighted the county’s severe weather sirens that are activated in the event of tornado warnings. He said those are painted at the local level and that there are some municipalities discussing expanding that alert system.

The other issue raised Wednesday was the sale of a radio tower to the Grand Valley VFD.

McCorrison said the tower site — located on land owned by Grand Valley VFD — was needed “to fill in a gap” in the county’s former radio system.

With the transition to the new system several years ago, McCorrison said the tower has been “sitting unused for the better part of two years.”

He said its location is such that Grand Valley is the only agency that “it would add value to.”

The sale price? $1.

Starting at $3.50/week.
