Board hears pitch for reinstatement of Sheffield girls softball
As discussion about the future of Sheffield girls basketball awaits the end of the season, a request has been made to reinstitute the Sheffield girls softball program.
Scott Barr approached the Warren County School Board on Monday with the request.
He told the board that the “softball program is up for reinstatement next year” and that he has been one of the individuals coaching the youth program.
“We have had good success with the team all along,” he told the board.
With junior varsity and varsity co-opted to Warren, Barr said that only three or four girls continued to play.
“It’s a bit of a struggle,” he said. “Some of the girls declined to play that were on our team. There’s no place like home. We feel we can open the team up again. We should have enough, I should say, to have a team,” he said, and “get things going in the right direction.”
He said they’ve worked on the field at Sheffield and it’s “ready to play on.”
“The coach has been great for Warren,” he stressed. “The challenge is getting home from work and getting her (his daughter) there…. Talking to these other girls that are playing for Warren out of Sheffield, the same struggle I don’t know how they’re going to make it. We’ll do our best.”
He asked the board to consider providing transportation in at least one direction.
The board engages in dialogue with speakers at committee meetings, not business meetings like the meeting on Monday so the issue will be discussed further at a future committee meeting.
